what are the dimensions of the switch ? i need one that is no more than 1 inch across

I installed it months ago and didn't measure it so not sure on dimensions but it was a small clear plastic circle as shown on Amazon, that the chain slides in to rotate the on-off mechanism. My guess is it is less than an inch. It was the same size as the original. It fit mine perfect.

Can I just cut off the wires of the old switch and attach this one with electric tape?

The old wires pull off easily from the old switch and fit easily into the new switch. Make sure you keep track of where the old wires come off so they go into the right place in the new switch. Best to do one wire at a time. Line up the new switch along side of the old switch and you should be able to see where the wires go. Connecting with electric tape may not hold or connect well,

This little guy will bail you out so you won't spend $300.00 on a new fan....

If you have a ceiling fan where the pullchain seems to be "broken off" at the entrance point, and the fan isn't working...you may have a situation where the little, fragile switch inside is actually broken. There's a little curved piece of plastic inside this thing that snaps off very easily. Being a cheapskate, and therefore, somewhat of a Handyman, I took my ceiling fan down, and took it apart. Sure enough, the switch was broken. The replacement works perfectly. Easy to install, actually even for a newbie. But I'm assuming that your shopping for this item 'cause you have fixed stuff DIY before...lol

Better replacement switch than what came in my new fixture...

So I purchased a new kitchen light fixture. The chain pull was stiff when pulled and after a few months chain broke inside the switch. Replaced it with this unit... works great and pulls smoothly. I'm sure this one will last a long time, as you don't have to jerk it like my old fixture.
