Initially, does seem to work and fits UK cans
Firstly, I'd seen this reviewed in the US, and knowing the US has different can sizes I didn't know whether it would cope with a standard (UK etc.) 330ml can. Good news, it does, although the can doesn't stick out the top very much.Given a smooth surface and pressure from the side, it does also seem to stick. (This was the important thing for me with kittens in the house - actually being a cooler is a bonus. I tested it because the reviews here have been mixed, and wanted to report back.) As with all things of this ilk, it relies on a rubber ring at the base being able to make a vacuum seal when the can is pushed sideways; there's then a valve which lets air in when you lift straight up. Keep poking it enough and air will likely get under it. Jiggle it up and down and I'm sure it'll let go. Using it on a boat (even if you can find a surface that's smooth after being exposed to the elements and if you're somewhere with no waves) therefore seems like a terrible idea, and I don't know why the manufacturers would think to promote it that way. Those are issues with this style of device rather than this particular implementation.Like the mugs and glasses which work the same way, the mechanism should help avoid trivial accidental spills. In my over-full study where I keep knocking things (COVID-19 lockdown) or in a living room with haywire cats, it's at least better than nothing, if a bit pricey. If you want something more secure, drop a (coated) magnet in a can and stick it to something with iron in it (or if you use steel cans, find a decent and thin fridge magnet to be a coaster) - but you won't have the zero-effort lift, and you'll need a metal surface. Or just screw a conventional holder to your chair and pull the can out when you need it. I'm happy enough on initial impressions to have bought a second. If I discover production quality issues and the second one doesn't work, I'll report back.
