So you can't just start the prime with the pump, and it will run? Pump's one-way valve makes you have to keep pumping?! Seems slow and laborious.

There are inexpensive products and CHEAP products. This one was CHEAP. It would start, and then lose suction. I'd have to restart again and again. Part of the problem was with the packaging. Everything was crammed into a package that resulted in several hard crimps in the tube. Tried to get them opened up by running hot water on them then squeezing the sides of the crimp to open it up. However, once I went back to using it again, the crimps (four or more) seemed to come back and break the suction. Got the job done on a one gallon gas-tank on my generator, but I'd never use it on a big job.

If i rubber band a piece of cloth to the inlet can i pump stagnant water out from a hole in my back yard?

IF YOU HAVE A SPARE MONTH TO DO IT POSSIBLY YES. IT PUMPS VERY LITTLE WATER PER SQUEEZE OF THE BULB.

will this work to drain used cooking oil from my deep fryer into a bottle?

It might work if you let the oil cool to room temperature. I used it to siphon gasoline from a generator that stopped working to a gas can. I worked just fine for that.
