It takes about 3 weeks for caterpillars to turn into butterflies, with 5 to 10 days in the caterpillar stage and 7 to 10 days in the chrysalis stage.

They probably can. The idea is that they attach to the paper that is on the top of the lid, then they turn to chryilis, then to butterfly. If you leave then in the jar, they would need to be released as soon as they change, so they can spread out.
