Is the mesh fine/tight enough to keep out gnats and fruit flies?

Yes, the mesh is fine enough to keep out gnats and fruit flies. There is also a piece of lace on the very bottom that works to keep out crawlers like ants. It is possible for an ant to go underneath - but not likely, at least in my experience. The lace looks a bit odd... but is very functional as it lays on and fills the gap in uneven surfaces.

How much weight is on these - so they don't just blow off with the slightest breeze?

They are fairly lightweight, but I don't think they'd blow away in a light wind. We use them to cover seedlings and low growing plants to keep the bugs off and rabbits out.
