Fantastic and comfortable
I have been purchasing these trainers since speedcross 3 came out and they don't dissapoint. The fit as recommended and very comfortable. Good for all round use and good for off road/Cross running. The only slight down side to these is the grip on wet rocks, it's not the best however the grip is really good on grass, soil and gritty pathways. I will continue to keep purchasing these whilst they make them. Would definitely recommend

Size for size quite a tight fit.
I first ordered a size 10. With a pair of waterproof socks I found these shoes to be an extremely tight fit around the toe box. Even without socks they were still tight. I immediately returned them for an exchange to size 11. The second pair arrived the following day. Fit is still snug with waterproof socks on, but they are comfortable. I am currently wearing them in around the house. If I encounter any problems I'll update the review. On a second point when I ordered the exchange pair of shoes they were priced at 50% more than the size 10. Knowing that I needed something like these shoes for a planned long distance hike in late September I went ahead and ordered them. Amazon then came back in a message and said they would honour the original price. This with the extremely quick delivery and no hassle process indicates to me that when Amazon works well it is second to non for online shopping. 5 * + for me. I completed a 192 mile hike across Northern England in these shoes. No problems at all. Waterproof socks kept my feet dry. They are great on wet grass and mud. Felt a little slippy on wet rock.

Cross Country Challenge
The fit was sound and today my first 4 mile light jog. Quality good, afforded protection to ankle and toes. Grip excellent. Ideal for gravel, tarmac and rough ground

Tried others but always come back to these
I have had several pairs of these, in between have tried other brands but these are the best for comfort and grip. The quick lace is great and secures your foot well. I use them 70% on trails, the rest on the road. The first thing to wear out is always inside of the heel, where the fabric starts to come away. This may just be me (lace tension and how my foot fits) as others have also done this, but this is the only reason I have to replace them (sole lasts week and they have never started to come apart). They last me about 18 months being used 6 times a week.

The 4 x 4 of trail running shoes.
Bought these as an upgrade from the Salomon Speedcross Vario 2, which I've stuck with for the last 3 to 4 years as there were always available cheap and did the job. Why the change, the outer mesh of the Vario 2 would always tear just back from the big toe on both shoes before they'd been fully used. Speedcross 5 has an improved outer mesh, which on close inspection appears to be tighter with less area to snag or tear. I have slim feet and these fit like the proverbial glove with no wayward movement no matter how demanding the terrain. To be honest I was dubious of the quick-fit lacing system as I have always used the extra heel-lock holes when lacing the Vario 2, however these have been through plenty of suction inducing mud to prove they hold the foot well. Thus far these have dealt with mud, flint, chalk, leaf-mould, wet grass, shingle and tarmac with aplomb, providing excellent grip when required and good return from the energy cell. In all money well spent for the joy of trail-running away from the madding crowd.

Misleading description !!!
Not waterproof – misleading product! The pictures clearly show the GORE-TEX sign, but the product I received does not have it. Without the GORE-TEX membrane, these are definitely not waterproof as advertised. This is completely misleading – I bought them expecting proper waterproof protection and instead got a cheap imitation. Very disappointed and feel scammed. Would not recommend to anyone!

I do a lot of trail running and hiking, and after going through several pairs of shoes, I've finally found the Salomon Speedcross series to be the best. Over the last couple of years I've gone through several pairs and about 2000 miles and they've remained my preferred shoe. First and foremost, sizing is on point but these fit narrow compared to a lot of shoes, even the wide version doesn't truly feel "wide." If you have a large/wide foot, you may want to try a pair on before you buy. However, with that said, that narrow fit usually translates to stability due to how snug around your feet they fit. Additionally, the tread on the shoes translates to the best grip I've encountered on a trail shoe which leads to a lot of confidence on the trails and hills whether it be rocky, smooth, slippery, or wet. The insoles are comfortable but in wetter conditions they can potentially curl up when descending steep hills. Additionally, I deal with a lot of foot pain, so for that they tend to run a little thin. I typically just replace the included soles with thicker, thermomoldable ones, which in my case, have consistently been the Viktos brand "Ruck Recovery" insoles but there are plenty of other options out there as well. Speaking of the tread, it's pretty durable. Through mostly dry, hard packed, southern California terrain, I'll average about 400-600 miles (or usually 4-6 months) per pair. With that said, at around 400 miles the tread around the ball of foot is usually worn down enough to consider replacing them just for the sake of potential slipping down less than stable (hard-packed with grainy pebbles/rocks and loose dirt) terrain. Also worth noting, it's not recommended to use these on pavement or asphalt, the lifespan of the tread will go down significantly if you do. So keep that in mind if you're using these in mixed terrain environments that may include paved roads. All that aside, I've yet to find a better all-around trail shoe.
