Birds of Prey: A Folding Pocket Guide to Familiar North American Raptors (Nature Observation North America)

The right one for me.
I count hawks and found that many of my fellow counters use lists like these. I use other lists in this series and I like the consistency. I believe in the idea that clarifying rather than confusing is a good idea. This works really well for me. I have seen another one that seems to be new by Peterson's. It shows several pictures of each bird I've looked at several and still like this one best. The Peterson's version might be worth looking at too.

Helpful quick reference guide
I am always seeing raptors when I am out and about. I love how this laminated pamphlet is able to quickly help me figure out what I am seeing.

Handy guide
I purchased this guide for use during an upcoming driving trip across the Northwest. I love to birdwatch and particularly enjoy birds of prey. This guide was great. It didn’t take up too much room and allowed me to identify many birds during our trip. I still keep the guide in the car and refer to it often

great for the field bag...
I stuck this guide - which folds like an travel map - in my field bag and went bird watching this afternoon. I used it to identify what looked like a female red tail hunting, later a swainson's hawk and then in the evening male and female kestrels. While definitive identification is still a crap shoot for me, the information in this guide was very helpful - it put me in the ballpark. Handy, laminated, minimal but to the point detail and a great field resource for $6.00 or less. I would have liked more detail...but here is where the larger field guides come in to supplement your observations. This guide gives you an idea and then sets the foundation for further review at home. Recommended.

Can't say enough about how useful these are.
All of the folding pocket guides that I've purchases are wonderful tools for those times when you're not field birding, but doing other things outdoors like sightseeing or walking around. They provide the most likely suspects you'd see in a particular area. I always travel with a field guide, but I like to take these foldouts with me. The are helpful (especially with birds on the wing).
