Do you have to use the Purple Leaf base or can you use another type (that is less expensive)?

I just screwed it down to my deck, it has nicely spaced holes and it's worked really well.

Does it rotate at all?

Yes, it’s actually quite nice the way it works. The crank that raises and lowers the umbrella pulls out and goes into a different hole to rotate the umbrella in a full 360 degrees.

will the umbrella go completely vertical?

Very close, excellent quality construction. Very versatile umbrella.

What is the size & shape of the main support post that the handle slides up/down on? Is it square or round?

Post is “Rectangle” and very strong. ours holds up to the ocean breeze daily. I will be buying another
