The Brightest Night (Wings of Fire #5)

My Thoughts: I would say this is an amazing end to an amazing series..... however, there are still what - three more books in the series? It just doesn't make sense, because the next few books have a completely NEW topic, with completely NEW characters. :/ Anyways, I just love Wings of Fire. The characters, the charm, the humor, the mystery, the EVERYTHING. (sorry, I'm in a mood for caps today :) ). I could repeat everything I've said in the previous reviews about the writing, but I'm sure that will bore everyone to death (it did with my brother) so I'm just going to stick with the story and characters today. SUNNY! To be honest, when I started this book, Sunny kind of blew me away. Sutherland just made her seem... so one-sided in the previous books, but then when actually get her perspective there's an overflow of thought, depth, and emotion. Her faith to the prophecy, the way she has a kind excuse for everything everyone does, and her undying love, trust, and loyalty in her friends is what we previously think makes Sunny Sunny. But there's so much more layered in - her hurt and annoyance at the way people look at her- treat her, rather - her understanding, her search for the good in everyone... it's all a lot deeper than expected. I really enjoyed her perspective, and actually liked her indignance (spelling? again, sorry). Thorn, Smolder, and Deathbringer were also some of the highlight characters, in my opinion, from the story. Deathbringer wasn't actually in the book that much, but when he is, I can't help laughing out loud at his comments. Thorn seemed like the perfect mother for Sunny...fiercely protective, loving, overall caring and loyal, but sharing some other qualities similar to Tsunami, too, which made me laugh as well. Smolder was an interesting character....I won't elaborate, but I wonder how differently Tsunami, Clay, Glory, and Starflight would have treated him. The ending was great... suspenseful, action-packed, everything you want in the climax of a series.

Suddenly talons wrapped around Sunny’s snout and shoulders and she was yanked into the dark trees. Book five of Wings of Fire, The Brightest Night, starts out with Sunny getting kidnapped by NightWings. The dragon tribes live on Pyrrhia, a land divided into tribal lands. Sunny is a little golden dragon from the SandWing tribe. She is very optimistic and always thinks things will turn out for the best. She is cleaver and funny. Sunny makes friends with everyone, even those who might be her enemies. She is good at persuading others to follow what she says. After being kidnapped from the rainforest, Sunny hears the NightWings’ secret plan to sell her and her friends, who are dragonets of destiny. She escapes and follows them to make sure their plan fails. The NightWings go into the Scorpion Den, in the Sand Kingdom. They want to meet with Thorn, the leader of the city, to contact a buyer for Sunny and her friends. Sunny follows them into the city. Thorn doesn’t like their plan and throws the NightWings in prison. Sunny finds out that Thorn is her mother, but is soon captured by Adix, who is a traitor of Thorn. He takes her to the evil queen, Burn. Thorn attacks Burn’s stronghold with a small army, letting Sunny escape. Sunny meets up with her friends in the rainforest. They devise a plan to stop the war raging between the dragon tribes and choose the new queen, as the prophecy says, and try to figure out the mystery of the murdered Queen Oasis. This book has a good message about not letting someone lay out your life for you, that you can choose your own path. Sunny and her friends are believed to be the chosen dragons of a prophecy and at first feel like they have to fulfill the prophecy. But, they find out the prophecy isn’t real and that they don’t have to follow the prophecy. Many of the dragons in the different tribes are looking forward to the prophecy being fulfilled. So, Sunny convinces her friends to follow the path of the prophecy for those dragons who believe. The dragon tribes want the war to end and Sunny and her friends can make that happen. I think it is important to do what you think is right instead of just letting someone else choosing your path for you. Sunny and her friends make their own destiny while choosing to help the dragon tribes and those who believe in the prophecy. I strongly recommend this book, for ages 8 year and older, if you like fantasy and dragons. You will never want to put the book down. All the books in the series are about 300 pages long. It is a good action fantasy with a constant fun story. I would give this book 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this series. The more I read, the more it pulled me in. If you like dragons, you will love this book.

The last book in this arc of the series focuses on Sunny, the Sandwing. I find it both ironic and wonderful that the dragonet that complains about being pushed off to the side is left for last out of all the characters. The book has to pull double duty as a way to wrap up this arc as well as be the showcase book for Sunny. I think it walks that line fairly well as Sunny's whole story focus is a crisis of faith in the prophecy. She works through these emotions and reconciles them by going off on her own to try and make the prophecy come true herself. And the amazing thing is, she just about does it too. Without spoiling anything, I'm happy to say that at least one of the cliches I had complained about in a previous book is addressed and resolved in a way that I think is good for kids to see. Sunny and her mother's relationship dynamic is such a lovely thing to see after so many of the other dragonets are spurned by their parents as well. My biggest complaints are that the major conflict is resolved in a little quicker fashion than I thought would happen and the end of the book feels more like it's setting up for the next series of books before it's finished telling this one. All in all though a solid end to the first arc. I know I'm personally happier knowing there's fiction out there starring dragons that kids are enjoying. Getting to experience that childlike wonder of "man, dragons are so cool" again was well worth the investment.

Amazing finale!I loved it! Sunny's book is full of adventure, excitement and peril.(Peril the dragon as well, if you know what I mean!) I was completely blown away by the crazy twists that were I'm it. WARNING: Spoilers in next paragraph!! As soon as I was "introduced" to Thorn I knew that she was going to be the SandWing queen. She just seemed right, or at least better than Blister, Blaze or Burn. And I also guessed that Sunny was half tribe, but I didn't assume she was half NightWing. I feel extremely stupid because I did not figure out that BLISTER took the treasure, and that's the sort of thing I would normally see coming. I didn't see that Starflight was going to end up blind, I thought that finding a cure for him was going to be part of the adventure. I'm also glad that Blaze didn't have to die, and that Peril got to be a hero after all. The epilogue was a little confusing, because I can't remember them saying a single thing about a school (or whatever it was) in Jade Mountain. END OF SPOILERS I'd say that the Wings Of Fire series is one of the best I have ever read, and I've read a LOT of books. I can't wait for the next book! -Fayegirl

Finally bringing closure to all the great conflicts of the first four books, this very satisfying book brings together all the threads in a surprising ending which is very true to the storyline. Sutherland makes everything fit and sets the stage for the next set of plots and new characters. Tui is a masterful storyteller and my 10 year old granddaughter and I are fully invested in the series. You will be as well. Highly recommended for the 8 to 12 year old set and maybe even a bit beyond as there are great themes for the early teens as well. Can be a bit violent at times so I don’t recommend for younger than eight.

I think it was a great book! There were some problems to though. Like how Sunny was able to get out of everything so quick. At the end *spoiler alert* she choses who the queen is to quickly, like there should be more fighting or arguing! Also I was confused for a minute because the next chapter after they chose the queen it starts in the middle of a conversation about what there going to do for their school. Like, maybe explain what is going first. I gave it four stars because all around it was a good book but there is room for improvement. I would give this book to a kid who like very little drama and lots of surprises.

Really good book, you can read it at the park, at lunch, or on a road trip. The book does a good job of grabbing your attention and making you forget everything! although this is not the first book, if you are looking for the first book this is not the book (I know it says in the title but just in case) so yeah pretty cool
