How wide is the band?

The Seiko 5 is a very large group of watches made for decades, many hundreds of variations of style since 1963. Today the world likes larger dials, Seiko responded with a larger case. The SNZG11J1 has (in decimal .866 ) a 22mm lug set width.

Can this watch be manually wound? Is it hacking, (stops the second hand when the crown is pulled out)?

This watch has the 7s26 movement. You cannot wind it manually and it does not have hacking. I dunno about the other responder, but if you wear the watch for 8 hours it should last through the night to next day. If it doesn't, then shake it for a full minute before wearing it. I have an office job and it never ran out for me, but I did occasionally shake it myself because I enjoy the winding sounds. If the watch isn't running, shake it for about 30 seconds, then set the time. Don't set the time between 21:00 and 6:00 (9pm and 6am).

If this is an automatic watch why does it need battery?

If the Seller says it takes a battery - then it is not an automatic Seiko 5 Watch. They are self winders and never do need any Battery
