Came for the period drama, stayed for the gorgeous men!
Little did I know I'd get hooked to this Musketeers series! I came for the period drama and I stayed for these gorgeous men...hey I'm not gonna lie and I know I'm not the only one. The costume design is tough, slick, and sexy. I didn't know I'd be hooked on this. So glad it was available on Prime.

Amazing...Just Amazing
I am a true Alexander Dumas fan and have read all 5 books in the "D'Artagnan Romances." Yes, there are 5 novels! The Three Musketeers and the last novel "The Man in the Iron Mask" are the two most widely known novels. If you have read the middle 3 (some combine two of these novels and refer to only 4 total - but I do not), you realize that there are some storylines from these novels woven into this series. Although much of this series strays significantly from Dumas' books, I have to say the writers and actors did a fantastic job keeping true to the characters' true nature and gave us imaginative extended stories similar to quality fan-fiction or children's pretend play. Think upon the times you pretended to be a favorite character from a book, movie, or comic and created your own storylines? This is exactly what this t.v. show did. If you know the true endings of our 4 Musketeers told by Dumas in his novels, then you likely cried but were completely content with the closing of his adventurous, romantic, and brotherly love filled tale. Well, this series does not disappoint. I was moved just as much by the last episode of this program. Few movies or tv shows can boast such moving devotion to Dumas' artful talent of storytelling. There is a Russian produced series that also extends the adventures of our Musketeers that comes as close as this BBC show. True, it is in Russian, but it is well worth the watch in subtitles. How do I think Dumas would receive this tv show? Dumas was a true story teller and with his mixture of vanity and love of entertaining, I think he would be thrilled that his characters have lived on. All for One, and One for All.

Not your usual Musketeers! Excellent entertainment!
A delightful mix of the original, mild historical fantasy, and excellent acting, writing, and directing. At least as good as the Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Michael York, Frank Finlay, Raquel Welch, Charlton Heston, and Faye Dunaway production of the 1970s—but very different.

AN ENTERTAINING VERSION OF A TIMELESS CLASSIC
I find with all of these serial shows, it takes the first year to establish the story line, and for the actors to develop their characters, which appears to have happened here. One thing that irks me about this series, is the inattention to the detail of the clothing of the Musketeers, which is obviously more functional than if they were to be wearing reproduction period clothing, that may in reality, be as hazardous in the action scenes to the actors (who perhaps have been raised wearing speedos), as appearing in the court of the french Monarch wearing their de rigeur 'barn cleaning attire'. It wouldn't have happened. Also, their manners were not in keeping with who they were supposed to be, and in reality, would have resulted in their consequent tortures and / or execution, for their effortless attitudes of impertinence and insubordination, that would have been acceptable in a tavern scene, but probably may have been deemed treasonous in the presence of the real King Louis. The cinematography was sumptuous, apparently all having been 'Photo-Shopped' and in HD, with many of the sets being in palaces in the Czech Republic which were beautiful, although not as opulent as were the courts and palaces of Louis XIV, synergized with the producer's penchant for using light pastel colouring for the clothing of the aristocrats, especially the ladies of royalty and nobility.I found that the writings and story line of Dumas were more recognizable in the season 2 series than they were for me in Season 1, which enhanced the entertainment.Furthermore, I think that the acting improved in all of the facets of the scenes, whether they be action, drama, comedy, or suspense. In other words: In no time, I was simply enjoying the show. I will probably buy season 3 when it is released.

An Adventure for One and All
So, I think this show is great! There's plenty of action, intrigue and romance. The characters are well-fleshed, but have plenty of room to grow and and reveal new secrets about themselves. Where Richeleu is scheming but devoted to France, Rochefort is severely unbalanced and cares only for himself. He makes for a villian that you can't wait to see fall - and hopefully before the damage is too great. For those who think the Athos character is dull, I beg to differ. Athos is the ideal stoic and therefore isn't meant to be overly emotional, yet he is constantly dealing with his love for Lady de Winter and the feelings caused by her betrayal. And yet he is an efficient leader who lacks much of the inner doubt the other musketeers deal with.Anyways, watch the show! It's fun and sexy without going over the edge into overly foul language or gratuitous shedding of clothes. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of both, but my point is this is a cool show that should appeal to free-thinking and family oriented folk.
