DOVO Dovo Straight Razor '

This item arrived on time and was exactly what I expected it to be. This straight razor was new out of the original packaging and was shave ready from that moment on. (Though there is a bit of a debate on how shave ready it is) Plastic scales (handle) with a shiny finish. Blade is nice; has the dovo logo on one side and nothing on the other.We live in a time where we throw a lot of stuff away. It's become so easy. Something gets used up and is no longer as good as it was, what do we do? Throw it out; get a newer and better one. Happens all the time with cheap shaving razors you see in your local stores. They're even referred to as "throwaways".Then you have your expensive brands that sell you an item that looks cool and does the job but then, eventually, you have to replace the blade. You throw out the head and you have to buy a pack of those heads for a price more than what you paid for the body and initial head. And so that's life. Buy cheap blades or buy a nicer looking one and spend an arm and a leg annually on new blades, to ensure you look respectable and to show others you can take care of yourself.I started to have a problem with this. I was feeling bad because I was throwing so much stuff out and I was feeling bad because I had less money in my pocket. I had an electric razor and that does the job but I've gone through several of them. It was something I thought would last a long time but would end up breaking down. Either something physical would break on it or it wouldn't keep a charge after a while. My last one I've had to keep constantly plugged into the wall. I was getting sick of shelling out more money just to take hair off my face.I started looking into staright razors. Despite a little maintenance to keep the blade sharp, straight razors are items that last a very long time if you know what you're doing. Sure the quality ones cost more than your typical razor where you have to replace the head, but over time you have to spend more money to replace those heads. A straight razor is a one time purchase. It's practically a guarantee that you'll spend less in the long run by picking one of these up. So I bought this one.After about a month of use,(I use it about once a week) I can say that with proper care this blade is still sharp.There's also a little plus for me here: straight razors are iconic in that they're a novel way at shaving. Not everyone today knows how to shave with a straight razor. Life has become faster. People don't have time. But I say make time for this. There's something about shaving with a straight razor that screams cool for me. An open blade with no guard and your going to use that to shave your face and neck?! Believe it or not, it might be one of the best ways to shave. I can't remember getting this close of a shave without developing ingrown hairs. Haven't had any ingrowns with this thing yet.If you're looking to take that next step and switch to a straight razor for shaving, this is a good starter blade.Update: 5/19/17I've purchased some sharpening stones in the past to keep the edge sharp. Anyone looking into using a straight razor should know that after a while of shaving with it, the blade will begin to lose its edge and will need to be sharpened once again.Let me be clear, I did some research before making these other purchases. Not just on products and brands but in technique on sharpening. There's a lot of info out there that'll show the dos and don'ts of sharpening straight razors. It's not rocket science but it does require some patience, a steady hand (which I hope you have if you're thinking of buying one of these) and the right materials.After sharpening it, I've noticed that the blade cuts smoother than I remember it doing when I first started. (Though that could be because I was still learning)I'm still satisfied with this straight razor a year in. My advice for anyone looking to pick one of these up, do some research in the general upkeep for a straight razor as well. Even if you know you won't be sharpening it yourself. At least you know the process. And if you're going to have someone sharpen it for you look into someone whose sharpened straight razors before (if you don't know someone yet)TL;DR: Great blade. Saves you money over the long run. Gotta learn how to sharpen it though. Or get someone else to do it.

First off, not the one I ordered so know that before you decide to order on Amazon. I ordered a gold Solingen with a white handle and got an Astrale with a black handle. I was brimming with anticipation as I opened the box ready to see a beautiful razor but what I got... meh.I'm not going to take a star off the product for Amazon's mistake. 5 star craftsmanship, 3 stars to Amazon for almost getting me what I ordered. The price difference is only $10 and which one is worth more depends on whether you're looking on Amazon or the Dovo website. Yes, they're flipped around, don't know why. Now I could get an exchange for the one I really wanted but it's another hassle (out of the many in life) and it's another thing I don't need to add to my to do list.As for the function of the razor itself, I tested it straight out of the box and the edge is superb, for the most part. I cleaned up around my beard with minimal pulling. Out of the three I now own this is by far the best with the Gold Dollar from Razor Emporium being a distant second (it works) and a generic cheapo I got for $25 being a paperweight. I got this because I wanted a razor that could shave as well as a shavette without having to buy disposable blade. Based on my trial run this razor can do that with the same level of comfort. I have used a shavette for a few years with more than a dozen brands of blades because it worked better than any straight edge I owned until now. This Dovo is every bit as sharp as a shavette with a brand new blade.One minor flaw I would like to point out is that there was one part of the blade that wasn't cutting out of the box. I went over the same spot several times and it just would not cut. So I took my new razor to a ceramic stone and in less than a minute the whole edge was sharp. If you have any issues with the sharpness out of the box I would recommend running it over a ceramic sharpener (make sure you know how first) because this razor will take an edge very quickly and easily.In conclusion, while not the model I purchased I am overall pleased with this razor. The craftsmanship of the blade itself is top notch and everything I hoped for when I first started trying shavettes and straight blades. Unfortunately I am not completely done with the shavette. I still have over 1,000 blades from when I was buying boxes of 100 during my experimental stage.Final word, thank you Dovo for making a superior product that meets and exceeds all expectations. Keep up the good work and you will have a lifelong customer should I ever need, or want, a new razor.

Below is my first review. Since then, the handle broke at the pivot point. The razor is super sharp and will shave you smoothly and cleanly, but WHY use cheap plastic? UNREAL! That's $120.00 with tax!I haven't had a chance to use the DOVO much yet other than swiping some hair from my leg and arm, but so far, I love it. It came in a thin plastic box holder that was safely wrapped with shrink wrap from the company. That made me feel good, and it gave me a peace of mind that the razor had never been used or removed. The razor itself is flawless and beautiful, and very well constructed. I might strop it a few times, but mine really doesn't need it. Next, I will shave with it tomorrow or the next day. I've let my facial hair grow a few days longer than usual in anticipation of using this brand new DOVO straight-razor! I can't wait!03-13-23 Update!!! I just finished my first full shave with the DOVO straight razor, and my first full shave ever with a traditional straight razor.It went great. I literally had one tiny nick so small that it didn't even bleed. It took a while, but I wanted to make sure I did it right. I've literally had more tiny nicks, cuts, and razor burn from regular cartridge razors. Even the one shave with a Shavette resulted in more nicks and irritation. If you're nervous though, I do advise learning to shave with a Shavette for a while since only a tiny bit of the disposable blade sticks through because a straight razor has the capability of gashing you open, and very severely. So don't do it with someone in the bathroom with you, no kids and no animals running around. Good luck and be safe!

I am a service member in Germany. I ordered this razor from Amazon and received it in good order. I shaved with it a few times and it started to pull a little. I also have a leather strop that I used on it before shaving. I use the linen side after shaving to ensure its clean and dry. I took it the Solingen dealer who told me it was not shave ready. He said if you can read the Solingen marking "on the blade" its not shave ready because honing and sharpening it takes that label off. Of course, I asked why didn't they come shave ready and he said (with interpretation) that this company (Solingen) sells them to the distributors and its up to these sellers to get them shave ready for the customers. Then he added, "Do you keep a bottle of wine out on the counter all the time, ready to drink? or only bring it out when you are ready to drink it?" If you understand German culture this makes perfect sense as this is the way they think about everything. They do things when its time to do things..not before..and certainly not afterwards.This was my first straight razor and first experience using a straight razor. I took my time and have yet to cut myself, but all in due time i'm sure. Like most I watched several videos online and had a few friends who recommended this as a good starting razor. I've always had a smooth babyface so this just makes it all the nicer. The initial 2-3 shaves were close and I loved that feeling. The one thing I will tell you is to keep your hands dry because the plastic scales move/flex very easily when wet. I used Taylor of Old Bond Street cream and after shave and Jack Black pre-shave oil. The razor makes a nice crisp sound when cutting, which I liked. The feedback is a good indicator to me whereas I'm sure some could find it unnerving. The steel is extremely solid. I have owned the razor for about 3 weeks and used it 10 times. Once those clean passes started to pull I just put it down and went to the professionals. I feel its better to KNOW its honed and sharpen than to guess. Who better to take it to than the Germans? I know some of you may not have that option but get it honed and remove that doubt from your mind.The main reason I purchased this razor was because it was made in Germany. I have lived in Germany over a year and they make products to last forever. If it has a German stamp on it you can guarantee it has gone through rigorous controls and testing. This company was originally in West Germany and they still use the same packaging, a bit of nostalgia but just goes to show you how they do business.

Could not be happier with this purchase. Took me some time to pull the trigger and just buy it but I have no regrets. Dovo is a great brand and I'm glad I didn't settle with just purchasing the plain razor with the plastic scale. This is a beautiful razor especially for the cost. Mine was nearly shave ready, just took some stropping which is very easy (make sure you buy one 3 inches wide, a strop is a must). This is also my first purchase of a straight razor, the closest thing I had previously was a disposable. This razor is good whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out. I get a few little nicks since I just started but my shaves are getting better. You have to be patient with this product and if you're new I recommend watching a lot of YouTube videos not only for how to go through the entire process of the shave but also to find what products you think you'll like. Lynn Abrams is a good place to start on YouTube. For beginners I recommend getting a shaving cream rather than soap since they will be easier to lather. I also reccomend getting a badger brush, I started with a $35 one I bought off amazon but hairs started falling out pretty quickly so I returned it and ended up getting an expensive Thater brush, Simpson is another great brand I know of and almost wish I got the Simpson Chubby 2 better badger brush. For beginners I also reccomend getting a good aftershave balm because it will give a good scent and most importantly help with any razor burn or irritation. I got a Lather & Wood sandalwood aftershave that I love, I'm a huge fan of sandalwood scents. Shaving with a straight razor of course takes longer than with an electric but I love the process of straight razor shaving and you can't get a closer shave. The blade also appears dark in the pictures but it is not, it is just the lighting and angle of the blade.

This razor is of amazing quality first and foremost. The fit and finish is amazing. Just look at the pics I attached. When you buy a razor at this price you buy it for those two things but is it shave ready? When I pulled mine out of the case I went to try to tree top a hair I had my eye on from my arm. I actually caught a hair before it and down it went. If you can’t do it out of the box there is always the strop. If you are ready for a straight razor then you need a strop at the very minimum. No exceptions. It’s how you shave with a straight razor. Strop before and strop after.I don’t understand the “not shave ready” reviews. Even if this barely shave hair directly off my arm, I bought this razor because of the quality of the steel first and the aesthetics second. I can hone or have it honed. Even if they are all as sharp as mine, guess what, you’re going to have to maintain that edge or have it maintained.Yes, mine passed the having hair test out of the box. If that is a big deal to you and you just can’t get it (quick tip, it’s all about the angle) strop it, linen then leather. I can tell you what you don’t hear people complaining about is spine thickness deviation or crooked spines which is what you deal with on inferior products.I hope this helps calm those worrying if it’s shave ready and hope you all enjoy the pics. As for the shave, you can’t touch the feel of this steel at this price point.

I've been shaving with this razor for 3 years now and love it. The blade length is a big plus for getting the easy cheek areas in a single stroke. I always had sensitive skin and find I get the job done with much fewer passes and actually quicker than a safety razor or electric. I've tried them all and this is the way to go. Just takes a little effort to learn and upkeep but well worth it. A few tips/what's worked for me:- Hone about once/year. I just did my third. You can tell when it needs it. Get an 8000 grit nagura stone. It doesn't take skill. Basically tape the spine to protect it and lay the blade flat on the stone. Watch a video.- Get a good strop. I have leather one side, canvas the other and I do 20 strops canvas then 20 stropa leather after each shave. 10-12 strops leather before. But I've skipped the pre-shave strop and didn't really suffer.- Get some camellia oil and rub a couple drops on the blade after each shave. It's super cheap and kept my blade like new. I took about a 3 month beard break but the blade was still pristine after being rubbed down with oil before-hand. Even the best razor will get rust spots if used in a warm, humid bathroom and put away un-oiled.- Expensive shaving soap doesn't really matter in my experience. You should get a good badger brush though. I tell the difference with brushes. Not so much with soaps. After the shave a hot towel followed by lotion-y after shave is nice too.Get good stuff and take care of it and it will take care of you. Once I got proficient my shave with this razor took about the same time as anything else, or maybe slightly quicker, even with the extra steps.

As a first time straight razor buyer, and user, I wish I had done a little more research on this, and I guess any razor. When you spend this much money on a razor, you'd expect to be able to shave with it immediately. But, you can't, not if you have any amount of whiskers as I do. For those looking to buy one for the first time, you may as well send it off to have it beveled and honed, because that's the only way that you'll ever be able to use it unless you buy the stuff to do it yourself as I have. It is NOT shave ready. If you want to be able to use this and care for it yourself, you have to first buy a 1000 grit stone to set the bevel edge on it. It doesn't have an edge. Then you need a 4000-8000 grit to maintain and keep it in shape. If you look up honing a straight razor on youtube as I did, they all say use the 4000/8000 Norton grit stone, well that's only if it has already had the bevel set, and new razors don't. Also, get this, the honing stone, needs a Lapping Stone, to flatten the dang stone that you just spent a boat load on to sharpen your razor, you have to by another stone to get the honing stone ready! AND, you need a Stropping strap to use before each shave. I'm only letting anyone that has no idea what they're getting in to when they buy this or most razors, and what you'll need. So, a run down of what you need: A 1000 grit stone to set the bevel, a 4000/8000 stone to hone, or maintain the bevel, a Lapping Stone to flatten the stones you bought, and a Strop to also keep the blade in ready shave condition. And, all of this stuff isn't cheap. There are a few other things that you need, but that's just to get the full experience of using a straight razor. So, look up the HHT test, (Hanging Hair Test) on YouTube so you'll see what a shave ready razor looks like. And, I'm not taking away from this razor for quality, as I've had no quality issues with it yet, but this razor is not usable without the other stuff to sharpen it. I just thought as expensive as these razors are, that there isn't any reason that they shouldn't be ready to shave with right out of the box. So, if you don't already have the stuff for this, get ready to spend at least another $150 for the stuff you need. Now, some razors on Amazon may be Shave Ready...This is not one of them.

Rasiermesser findet man im Netz in letzter Zeit immer häufiger. Da fangen angeblich Solinger klingen auch schonmal bei 6,99€ an wobei es nach oben fast keine Grenze zu geben scheint. Ich habe lange suchen müssen um etwas vernünftiges zu finden und bin hier schließlich fündig geworden.Die Marke Dovo mit dem Hauptsitz in Solingen stellt seit über 100 Jahren Rasiermesser her, für mich ein wichtiger Punkt, denn mit dem Schliff der Klinge steht und fällt die Qualität.Das Rasiermesser ist nun seit zwei Monaten fast täglich im Einsatz und ich möchte es nicht mehr hergeben. Ohne Streichriemen und Schleifpaste hätte ich es von Beginn an nicht nutzen können, nach dem abziehen (10x je Seite) ist es aber sehr, sehr scharf.Das rasieren geht mit etwas Übung zügig von der Hand, das Ergebnis ist super und meine Haut verträgt es viel besser als die gängigen nass- und Trockenrasierer.Einzig bei der Kunststoff griffschale wurden Abstriche gemacht, die sich aus meiner Sicht aber sehr gut verschmerzen lassen.Geliefert wird das Messer in einer „versiegelten“ Kunststoff schubbox, perfekt für Reisen oder um es sicher zu lagern.Ich würde dieses Messer heute auch wieder kaufen, allerdings macht die Qualität eher den Eindruck, dass ich dieses Teil noch vererben kann...

Great blade.Rounded ends so more forgiving. This blade is carbon steel thus much easier to sharpen, unlike the steel blades. However the steel blades don't tend to rust like the carbon steel. You need to keep this blade dry at all times (after shave) or it becomes pitied (like mine has within the first month, but only because I did not make any effort to keep the blade dry!) The handle is plastic like most Cut Throat Razors. The blade is 3" long however most Leather Strops are only 2"wide. This is normal and you have to sharpen the blade with an X motion, going up and down about around 50 times on the leather bit, 25 times on the suede side and 10 on the cotton. This sounds a lot but will get it done in about a minute with practice. Depending on hair growth you will need to sharpen about once a week?month? Most Leather Strops come with two sides but three is better. Honing balm paste is used on the Leather Strop to stop it drying out. Look on YouTube for tuitions on how to sharpen blades.The first shave.Great. Missed a lot so ended up have two shaves in succession. Very pleased and I think I am a natural using it. To go with the new blade I splashed out on some posh shaving cream and a brush too. But then, HELL did I have a shaving rash. Horrible shaving rash like I have never had before. All day after the shave I just wanted to scratch my face off! When it calmed down I had another shave. But then a horrible shaving rash again! This carried on for about a week by which time I was well hacked off ( and you have to be careful because if you continue shaving over/on the shaving rash you could end up with a load of creators all over your face!) So I went back to my old razor for a bit so that things could calm down. I then introduced things back in slowly. Old cream, new blade. One shave every other day not every day, one stroke at a time, not two or three. Now some four/five weeks after first getting the blade I am shaving every day (just) still with the old cream, but no rash.My opinionGreat blade. Well pleased I got it. No more keeping on buying razor blades that just go blunt. Now the opposite is true and this Dovo straight razor is very sharp! You need to get used to it, how to sharpen the blade and that, and it shaves Sooo close... The upshot is that this blade suffers no fools!

Horrible waste of money. Rusted in few days. Barely shave ready. Perfect for a 12 year old blonde shaving peach fuzz not for a fully stubbled man. Very disappointed. Left me wondering was this a real Dovo.
