Advanced Russian: From Reading to Speaking, Book 1 & Book 2 (Russian and English Edition)

We really like it, I recommend it to others, it is advanced though and may be a challenge to some. It uses real everyday Russian language as opposed to 'text book' Russian. My wife who is a native speaker believes it is a great teaching tool. So if you have a good handle on Russian intermediate and then ready to move to more natural and native speech this is a great course. Probably suitable for a 3rd year undergraduate student. We have liked the video clips on the included CD so far, and there is so many of them. Congratulations on a modern course in Russian! there is plenty of scope with the course with a variety of difficulty in tasks. The Grammar supplement is also good, which is tailored slightly towards the lessons them selves. I recommend that it is used either with a formal course or in a tutoring environment. It has a lot of assignment and homework problems perfect for this. But you could still get a lot out of it by yourself. The videos are made for personal use and not in full-screen format, unless you purchase the 3-DVD set separately. This said though the size is fine and quality good, and the personal screen is filled with lots of other use-full items that help you watch the clips. Finally It is lots of fun, which is something somewhat rare for Russian courses!

This is a wonderful course for those re-learning their Russian or for those who are advancing in their current course work...

She is fantastic to have put together such a remarkable gifted method of presenting Russian vocab and conversation in a progression like this. Very usable and I read it often learning more each time. For the advanced and her intermediate book I use to teach. Awesome!!

The only real issue I have with this book is that it makes such frequent reference to the Soviet Union and phrases that were popular in Soviet times that I'm not sure if I'm learning to speak Russian as spoken today. Considering it was published in 2010, it seems to be stuck in the past, but I'm not sure if that's really true or if it's just the impression one gets when there is so much reference to a time period that ended nearly two decades prior to the books publishing. Still, it does a lot more to help you actually speak everyday language than many a Russian course does.

My set did not come with the DVD set. It had a paper disc with instructions to go to the web. I am frequently in countries where this is not useful at all. How do you get the promised DVD?

don't know what to say yet. the book doesn't look like what i'm looking for though. I am looking for the same type as the older ones used to be.

Very well done tool for advanced students who need to enrich their lexicon and cultural background of comtemporary Russian, reading made easy by a strong support in terms of linguistic aid and, historical news. Repetition of phrases from the main texts through the various exercises grants one can acquire the major benefits

These books have lots of good exercises (for nearly all of which there is a key) backed up by excellent online material ( I particularly like the videos of actors reading the stories - all at normal speed). I am using the books without a teacher but it would probably be even better with a teacher - or, for the speaking exercises, a native speaker. I would estimate the level at .around B2 to C1 (TRKI II to III).

Some interesting exercises. Pity that almost every story is about love and romantic drama. Also the software in the CD doesn't work (I'm using a Mac). The material is available online, but through a very user-unfriendly website.
