Brings Your Gear Back to Life
I've tried several DWR restoration products over the years, and Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On is the one I keep coming back to because it simply works. I recently used it on my Rab waterproof shell, which had started to wet out after many miles in rain, wind, and regular use. The membrane was still performing, but the outer fabric was absorbing water instead of beading it off. After cleaning the jacket and applying the spray evenly, the difference was immediately noticeable. Easy to Apply The spray bottle gives good control, allowing me to treat only the exterior fabric where it's needed. I paid a little extra attention to the shoulders, hood, cuffs, and upper back—areas that see the most abrasion from backpack straps and constant exposure to the weather. Real Performance on the Trail Once the treatment had dried, I tested the jacket on several hikes in wet conditions. Water beaded up again and rolled off the surface instead of soaking into the face fabric. The jacket stayed lighter during prolonged rain, dried faster afterward, and remained noticeably more comfortable throughout the day. What I appreciate most is that it restores water repellency without compromising breathability. That's especially important during long climbs, where moisture from the inside can become just as uncomfortable as rain from the outside. Extends the Life of Good Gear Quality shells from brands like Rab are built to last for years, but even the best DWR finish eventually wears off. Rather than replacing an expensive jacket, this treatment restores the performance it was designed to have. For me, it's become part of regular gear maintenance, just like cleaning boots or checking trekking poles before a trip. Final Thoughts If your waterproof jacket is still structurally sound but the outer fabric is wetting out, I highly recommend giving Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On a try before considering a replacement. It's easy to use, economical, and restores the water repellency that makes a good shell perform the way it should. For anyone who spends serious time in the mountains, it's one of those maintenance products that's worth keeping on the shelf.

Water based waterproofing for cloth material.
No fragrance or strong oder, easy to spay on clean material for waterproof, like down filled coats. No noticeable residue on material following instructions. Look normal in appearance. Durable held up in winter.

It does its job, but only halfway
I would say that this product do its job, but you might need more than 1 and even 2 applies if you want to cover a whole jacket for example. I made sure to follow the instructions but still there are some spots that it did not cover. I made a second apply to those spot missing the product and still not waterproof. Consider getting a couple of spray bottles and apply a few times until every spot is waterproof.

worked well
My daughter sprayed an existing jacket with this coating for her trip London. Worked well and saved having to buy a tech jacket she doesn’t need in Tucson.

Good For Vertical Flooding Conditions
I've tried several of the alternatives to Nikwax products and every single time I keep coming back. Although I have probably a half dozen stories to tell about my experience, I only need to relay one fairly recent story to tell you why I trust this (and the other Nixwax products) for most of my waterproof gear. In 2014, we set out for a month long road trip to Alaska in the middle of summer, planning to tent it all the way up and back. Unbeknownst to us, we made the trek in the wettest summer that pretty much everyone alive could possibly remember, it was wet! For 30 days straight, it rained 27 of them. This wasn't your average drip-a-bit then blow over type of rain. No. It was torrential downfall followed by a downpour followed by a steady drench thereafter. It was an unreal bout of rain, like we were living in a rain cloud for a month. All my gear, including my tent, footprint, rain fly and gear's duffel bags were treated with this stuff or other Nikwax products. It's never a cheap preparation, but in hindsight, it's always worth every penny. Night after night, my aging camping gear and waterproof clothing were pounded from all sides with unrelenting rain, put away wet only to be brought out into more wet. What little breaks in the weather we could get usually dried things out just enough to get wet again a few hours later. We could barely get a break, except for maybe once every 8-10 days or maybe a lucky clearing during setup or teardown of camp. The point? We stayed mostly dry. Our clothes, our sleeping gear, our camp gear. Dry, all of it. Every night. Every storm. It kept one pretty lady awfully happy, and that's no easy feat faced with constant rain! To be certain, some of it was probably technique as I cut my teeth camping in Oregon where you learn how to deal with rain well before you can afford technical preparations. But from one rain master to another, the secret to maintaining technical gear for whatever gets thrown at you is Nikwax. Bottom line, it's proven itself to be my trusted waterproofing material and probably always will be. Is it perfect? No, it's not going to make Goretex out of nylon no matter how you slice it...but it'll be better than pure nylon, for sure. Does it help? Without a doubt. When your gear is starting to see it's age, will it revive it enough to keep it going? Yes, and my 20+ year old used and abused Cascade Designs tent that I'd take anywhere, anytime proves it. Do you need to augment your preparations for rain otherwise? That's probably a good idea, at a minimum a solid seam seal on all rainfly seams and liberal use of tarps, when needed. I've used this stuff for years and that's only the latest reason I keep coming back for more.

As noted in by others... makes a small improvement, nothing like garment's ORIGINAL water-resistance
I had read the reviews so I came in pretty skeptical but wanted to try because I love the jacket so much Followed instructions excruciatingly closely: washed, application, drying. Used the entire 10 oz bottle on that one jacket, 2 separate applications after I wasn't pleased with the results of the first It definitely *improved* the water resistance, but while water beads initially, within less than a minute it starts soaking in to the material. Even being in the lightest of mists for 15 minutes resulted in a heavy water-laden jacket. And this was a jacket that could take hours in heavy rain with no absorption at all when new. From reading the reviews of competitive products, they all seem to suffer from this same problem. Is there a way to actually restore a jacket to like new condition??

A must-have product for rekindling your rain gear!!!
This product is the REAL deal. I work outside in all sorts of rainy, wet weather. My raincoats and shoes had lost their rainproof abilities so I bought this. Washed coats thoroughly in washer, left damp as instructed, sprayed the diluted solution on really well and hung to dry. Scrubbed rain/hiking boots well with soapy solution and rinsed. Applied dilution soaking them well. Let air dry. All items are perfect!!!! So very happy. I did not know that the water repellent qualities deteriorate over time. Now they are like new and have kept me dry and happy. Can’t recommend this enough. Just remember if it wasn’t waterproofed to begin with, you won’t make it waterproof just by using this product (so you cannot waterproof a sweater, for example). I love this stuff. Economical too. Big bottle!

Helps restore waterproofing
I can't help but wonder why some have had bad experiences with this product or any of the waterproofing products for that matter. There comes a time when your garments are beyond repair due to wear and tear or simply just neglect to care for the garment. Often times, we don't wash our outdoor gear as much as we should or keep up with the waterproofing. I've been guilty of that on a couple of items. When the fabric or coating gets to the point where it needs replacement, no amount of this product or any other similar product will perform miracles. Even on my most neglected gear, it still brings back some of the waterproofing properties. On my rain jacket that I've had for many years, I've only washed it a handful of times and reapplied the waterproofing when it was too late. It still wets out on some heavy wear areas but I wasn't expecting a miracle as upon closer exam, the fabric is worn and no amount of application would be able to bring it back to "like new". Flip to the gear that I do maintain on a regular basis. Waterproofing is like new and feels like is has been maintained. I have not had any wetting out issues with the gear that's been treated on a regular basis. The spray is a bit messier but combined with the Nikwax wash in, it does a really good job. I would recommend this bigger bottle if you maintain your gear. Always good to have this on hand. Wear some gloves when using this as it leaves a film on your hands. It does have a vinegar smell to it. It doesn't bother me, to some it does but then again, we all react to smells differently.
