Does this inhibit rust?

Bluing is an acid process and makes polished metal more susceptible to rust, BUT, the surface tension improves the ability of oil to remain on the surface. So, while the bluing itself does not improve rust resistance, a properly oiled blued surface does. But you can't skip the oil. Wipe it down once a month or after cleaning and use, with enough to just darken the surface and turn it glossy.

Will this darken nickel plating?

Hi, I haven’t tried, but in my knowledge and research I believe it will not... you could try to contact the company? Nickel is a different chemical mixture than most materials. We use it on steel guns from holster wear.

Does this work on Sterling Silver?

It doesn't say, it doesn't work on stainless steel is what it says. Basically what this chemical does is slowly rust metal and stains to give it the bluing effect. Sterling silver doesn't rust but the blue stain in this might change the color but not like a steel firearm. Hope this helps.
