Works great
It’s a great strainer for very small foods, it’s good on rice and they don’t slip through it. Good for little beans too. Handy gadget if you make a lot of rice

It's Actually Awesome. This Asian Approves.
Disclaimer: I'm about as clumsy and useless in the kitchen as one can get. I also have bad OCD so most tasks tend to take me a lot longer than expected. In this respect, washing a couple cups of rice in a standard bowl takes me a legitimate 5 minutes. With this straining washing bowl though, I'm done in less than 2. It's great to be able to just run water over the rice and slosh it around without having to constantly (and carefully) dump out the water. It also allows much better inspection of the rice, making picking out debris and bad grains easy. My mom used to be able to wash rice incredibly fast using a regular bowl, so there's a good chance she'd think this strainer bowl is stupid. But for those who aren't so adept at the task, it's a sanity-saver. I cook for my dad, and 95% of his meals involve rice, so I've been using this bowl literally every other day for over a year. It's held up absolutely great: no cracking, peeling, or any signs of wear. I've only ever hand-washed this bowl though, so I don't know how durable it is if constantly machine-washed. Also, I read at least one review that mentioned that rice debris tends to get clogged in the strainer's holes, and this is true. However, what I've found is that once dry, the rice debris literally just fall out on their own (or at most, a couple of light taps on the counter is all that's needed to dislodge any stragglers). Things might only be this easy with certain types of rice though (I use standard Asian sticky rice).

Not as good for rinsing rice but very good for other types of food
Not as great for washing and draining rice but very good rinsing other types of food. The the holes on the bottom are small so it can take a minute or two too fully drain the rice and once drained you have to really tap hard on the bowl to empty the uncooked rinsed rice out of it. It has a vent opening at the top side for faster drain but I don't recommend using it on rice because the rice can easily escape from the opening. I like how this works with draining pasta. I pour cooked boiling pasta into the bowl and let it slowly drain and then I add a couple of ice cubes to firm the past into an "al dente" state. The bowl is great for washing my pre-cut stir fry vegetables. I toss the vegetables in the bowl and spray them with faucet nozzle. It cleans and drains any food . It is Great for washing off the salt off some foods for instance if your beans or some other solid food came out too salty, you can toss them in the bowl and wash the salt off. If you are your purpose of buying this is for the sole purpose of rinsing rice you might not be as satisfied with it. For rinsing rice I recommend you use a large sifter instead. For Pasta, Vegtables, beans . Fruit etc... I recommend this bowl.

Very versatile and works well
I have used it to rinse rice (does great job keeping tiny rice grains in), as well as colander for rinsing fruits and vegetables. The pour spout is a great idea and works well. Do get the larger size!

Fruit, Rice, and Quinoa Washer Magic!
I am a professional chef and like to prepare sushi at home. But, my western style steel colander wasn't the right size for sushi rice and to harsh on the rice as I was cleaning it. I ordered this real Japanese fruit and rice washer from (japan super mall) and what a difference it makes! The bottom of the colander has very small drainage holes which are much smaller than a western style colander. Plus, its made out of a see through strong plastic which is much more gentle on the rice when its washed, swirled, and strained. In addition, there is a pour spout which is not on the top lip, but is located below the top and allows you to keep the rice from flowing out as you wash it. Before I had to use three things; 1. a pot, 2. a bowl, and 3. a strainer. Now I use just the washer by itself. This is a product that is part of a culture and history from a country that is nearly 10,000 years old. It's not just a rice washer, its all the families that have made rice for thousands of years and know how to design a product that is simple, but true. The beauty of this product is that you can use it for any type of washing and straining during food preparation including rice, grains, and seeds such as Quinoa. Be gentile when washing and slowly pour the water out. If you go to fast the contents can get stuck in the drainage grid. This should not happen if you are slow and gentile. Sushi is a form of Culinary Art. At this price its a steal!

How much can you ask from a wash bowl?
It's a plastic bowl, possibly made in Japan (I ordered mine from Japan Bargain and it has "Made in Japan" molded into the bottom in tiny letters), used to wash rice before cooking. It doesn't do much more than that, but it does that one thing well. I have a Sanyo rice cooker that I love. But by all reports, replacement cook bowls are almost impossible to find. Which means that when the nonstick coating on the rice pot goes, the whole rice cooker is going to end up being replaced. So I don't want to create unnecessary scouring wear by washing my rice in the cook pot. I tried a strainer, but the water just flowed through, and it was hard to get any kind of a washing action going, and the rice got caught in the mesh. This bowl has tiny perforations in the bottom only, along with some molded "nubs" on the bottom to (I guess) help scrub the rice as it swirls. The water drains out slow enough that you can get a good wash, and then gauge the clarity of the water as it flows out. It does tend to hold on to a few grains of rice when you dump it out, but I'm not sure how you'd go about keeping wet rice grains from sticking to wet plastic. It's a good rice wash bowl. Worth the price for me.

Essential kitchen accessory for rice cooking
Bought this together with a rice cooker purchase. We went with the 2.5-Quart capacity, so hopefully it'll accommodate 6 cups of uncooked rice for rinsing. We've only been making 2-cup batches to start with. This makes rinsing rice much easier and quicker than working with a larger bowl, instead of swishing rice around with your hands/fingers in ice cold tap water, and possibly losing a bit of rice down the sink drain in the process. This is so easy, pour in your cups of rice, and run under a cold running faucet, keep swirl/swishing motion the strainer around in a circular pattern for several minutes - at least for 2-3 cups worth of rice. For larger amounts like 4-6 cups, if you want to keep your hands and fingers dry, a person could rinse rice done in smaller manageable 2-3 cup batches at a time. Keep swishing rice around until water below runs clear, swirl and tilt the rice rinser side to side, and to the front. Water exits from 2 places - the small grill at the bottom, and the slotted grill in the front pouring lip - both are small enough to prevent rice from escaping. Some grains of rice may get stuck in the grid or slots, but very easy to tap or poke out. Nothing has permanently logged stuck in yet, and worse case, would only require a pin to dislodge. We're very pleased with this affordable and necessary purchase. As other reviewers have stated, it literally is a game changer, not having to deal with ice cold tap water and getting cold fingers while trying to rinse the rice for several minutes. To anyone who already has a rice cooker, or looking to buy their very first one: we highly recommend you buy one of these with your rice cooker purchase.
