Love this grinder
I've had the grinder for a few months now and I still get so happy every time I use it. I miss it when I'm dining out, and almost packed it for traveling over the holidays. Yeah, I sort of love pepper, what can I say! Pros: * Feels great in the hand, very sturdy and durable * Easy to fill, easier to use -- I could see this being a kind nonelectric grinder for people with arthritis due to the mill's smooth grinding, easy-to-grip turning base, and (relatively large) quantity of pepper grinded per turn. * No, seriously, this thing spits out pepper like you wouldn't believe. Using the cheapo plastic supermarket grinders is an ordeal (especially with wet or damp hands!) and this is such a delight. Covers a roast or steak in just a few twists. * Easy to adjust grind size; I would possibly agree that 3 variations would be sufficient since there isn't too much of a notable difference in the 2 and 4 compared to their neighbors, but I won't complain about more options either! * I appreciate that it has a partially clear body so you know at a glance when to refill. * Kitchen workhorse that also looks good enough to use for table service. Cons: * I've seen some reviews complain that the fine grinding isn't fine enough for their tastes. I could see that as a fair point, but I wonder how many of those people are familiar with freshly-ground vs. factory pre-ground? It's plenty fine enough for me. * I was happy enough with the grinder that I purchased the matching salt grinder within a couple of weeks. In retrospect, I could've saved some cash by buying the set (20% less expensive at the time of writing) vs. each piece separately. I don't know if you can call this a con though, just a lack of faith/foresight on my part. If you're thinking you might eventually want both, then do it all at once -- you won't regret it.

Best pepper mill I ever used
I had one of those old wooden pepper mills that had a retaining nut on the top that also functioned as a coarseness adjustment - and you could never get an even grind. The mill was always awkward to refill and I had to place the mill in a ramekin because loose pepper would leak from the bottom all over the countertop. After several years use the nut became loose, the threads began stripping so nut wouldn't lock tighten. I've never been satisified with the amount of pepper the mill held, it seemed like I was refilling the thing too often - and I use a normal amount of pepper to season. So I went online shopping for a new pepper mill. After having such good experiences with other Oxo products I needed to look no further than the Oxo Good Grips Pepper Grinder. The features I like are: the body of the mill is clear acrylic so that you can always see how much pepper is in the mill; it holds nearly five ounces of pepper (two and a half times my old mill); the mill, like all the Oxo products I've purchased, is ergonomically designed - it fits well in your hand; an ingenious design feature is that the mill sits on it's base, not where the ground pepper comes out, that way the pepper doesn't get all over your countertop; it is also very easy to refill, again from the base which has a cap that unscrews leaving a wide mouth that is easy to fill with peppercorns and not have them roll all over the kitchen; there are five (5) coarseness adjustments made by simply moving a lever from a small dot (very fine) up to a large dot (very coarse), as a bonus Oxo provides peppercorns in your mill - so it will be a while before you'll have to refill. I love to cook and appreciate when the tools I have to work with are so well made and actually do the job they are intended for, I have found that every Oxo product fits that bill. Another big bonus with Oxo products is the price, they are very reasonable for their quality. My experiences with Oxo products have been so good I will not even consider any other manufacturer of kitchen products.

The Best of the Best
The BEST pepper mill on the market. I've tried a dozen different brands and this one beats them all. OXO is brilliant in how they designed this. The grinder is at the top so you don't have to wipe pepper from underneath it. The grind is excellent! it's the first mill that actually can do a fine grind to perfection. It's attractive and a very good buy. I highly recommend! And it comes full of peppercorns!

Good grinder but not quite perfect
The OXO Good Grips is the fourth pepper grinder I've purchased in the past several years. Perhaps my expectations are too high but my needs are: grind peppercorns easily; grind in a range of sizes from fine to "nearly cracked pepper"; adjust easily; hold a large amount of peppercorns; be durable (this means it needs to last more than just a few months of daily use); and it would be nice if it looked good on the table as well as on the counter and, personal preference, operate with a crank. Well, so far I have not found the "perfect grinder" but this one is close. It grinds easily and grinds through a full range of sizes -- for a change, "coarse" is actually too coarse to go through a pepper shaker. The adjustable ring makes adjustment easy but you do sometimes need to try a size to make sure it is what you had in mind. It holds a modest amount of peppercorns. Disclaimer: we use a lot of pepper as seasoning and use almost exclusively freshly ground pepper -- for us, this grinder holds three to four weeks supply. OK, but more would be better. It is easily filled: remove the screw cap--something that was redesigned from the earliest models of this grinder. Durability seems to be satisfactory -- we use it regularly (read "daily" here) for the last five months and there have been no problems. As far as aesthetics -- its OK, not as striking as the Atlas copper or brass mills, but not displeasing. It does not have a crank. It operates by a twist of the black plastic top (which appears as the bottom in most pictures). Ground pepper comes out of the silver end. Not a deal breaker, just not my "ideal grinder". All in all, I like it. I use it daily. It works well. I bought several more for gifts to other cooks I know. However I am still looking for the perfect grinder.

I have one of these for salt, and it’s well built, works well, looks great It’s easy to fill, it’s transparent and has a great brushed steel finish. I decided I want the matching pepper corn crusher too, and found that it was cheaper when I bought a set , in a fancy black metal. So I bought those- meh, not the same, I kept holding back for months and finally got this, and now I’m satisfied. So, go for this, Oxo good grips almost always has given me a good product and this is one of their better ones. It works well, looks great and is easy to maintain. Buy this one- in brushed steel, don’t get the black metal finish that is cheaper when you buy a set, you’ll thank me later.

Upside down grinders mean that no mess is left on the table. Easy to change grinding size - fine to coarse with the flick of an easy to use lever. Easy to refill - can be unscrewed and filled easily Grinding grip makes easy to use for stuff hands. I like everything about this. OXO has totally delivered on a number of my every day kitchen gadgets. I also love the little scrubby detail brushes. Some person has stolen the one with the rubber finger on the end and I will be buying a new one. The only one I don’t like is the dustpan and brush. Well done design team.
