Q: Sound pretty poor - reviews say u need to play for a while to get true sound is this correct ?

As with any speaker, even the most expensive one, the sound improves with time. That said, I found the quality of sound pretty good right from the box. It always depends on what do you connect to it as sound source. Also, they're not computer speakers so they're best enjoyed from a distance with your head level with those speakers to get the most out of them.

Q: Is there any latency issues if I connect to my ddj400 controller?

If you're connecting with Bluetooth there will always be latency. If by "issues" you mean worse than normal latency then no, but you'll always have latency.
