Yes-it works well on my NEX 5R. GV

for the nex 5r, can i use the viewfinder and the flash?

no. the viewfinder plugs into the same slot as the flash, so they can't be used at the same time

How secure is the attachment to the camera? My concern is it might somehow get snagged on something and fall off without my knowing it.

It is very secure. Uses a thumb wheel to tighten same as the flash uses. The viewfinder tilts so if it were to snag it will just tilt up and not snag or break. I leave mine dedicated on the 5N since I got it. It is a quality unit.
