Demoted, Isolated, Dumb Founded and Witness to Homicide. What a way to start your 1st day!
We find our main character on a puddle jumper demoted and transferred to an isolated post. On touch down he is a witness to an accident that turns out to be homicide, he's out of uniform and over his head within the first hour of landing at his new post. Not your typical murder mystery! I really enjoy the Kate Shugak series and noticed that the author had also written another series. As a whim I decided to try the Liam Campbell series, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story line. The main character is not your typical homicide investigator, he works hard at trying to understand, stumbles, tries to manage his own life and manages to solve the mystery when chaos abounds him. I have read a lot of James Lee Burke and was disheartened when I figured out the authors formula for mystery, the same with Patricia Cornwell (I still recommend reading their books for an intelligent read). I enjoy Dana Stabenow's books because the characters are not overly intelligent, and they work hard to solve the mystery (sometimes stumbling over evidence by accident). If you like murder mystery books and are looking for change from the usual formulated mysteries, try this book and you'll find yourself enjoying the story.

left hanging
Seven months ago, I was loaned this ebook and then I had to return it before I finished. This book was then put on my list of one that I wanted to read (finish). I really wanted to find out the ending.Liam Campbell is an Alaskan state trooper that is reporting to his new post. As he is stepping off the plane, there is a murder--standing above the victim is a previous lover of his, Wy. Next thing he knows is there has been a shoot out in this small town also.Several months later, I was able to get another copy of this book to be able to finish it as I was really interested to see who killed Bob, the victim Liam first ran into. There are a few more murders, some deceit going on as well. Overall all a pretty good book, you got a glimpse of 'life' with the natives up in Alaska and the story line kept your interest. After reading a few pages, I was quickly able to refresh my memory as to who all the characters in the book were and what role they played so I did not have to start back at the beginning. (Though I normally do have a great memory). The only thing I was not happy with was the ending...it just sort of stopped and did not end but, then again this is a series of books about Liam Campbell so I knew there was more to come. I just was not sure if each book was just going to be a story if or if there was a timeline in which you should read them in order. At the end of my ebook, there was a short excerpt from the next book in the series, So Sure of Death, and it picks up 3 months later from where this one ended--so it sort of helped to give a glimpse in regards to the ending and what was going on between Liam and Wy. I do plan on reading the next book in this series. Dana Stabenow also has a Kate Shugak series and from what I have heard that is suppose to be an excellent series but, I have not yet had a chance to read any of those books yet.

Really great story
Great story and good characters. Can you imagine stepping off a plane and immediately finding a body? What's worse, it is YOUR job now to find out what happened. Then the former trooper comes running up, tells you to have a good one, jumps on a plane, and flies away. You have a dead body, no place to stay, no idea even where the police station is - if there is one - and your uniform, gun, everything is still to be unloaded off the plane. From such a humble beginning, things go downhill. Very well written and enjoyable. I'll be getting the rest of the series.

I now realize this was a perfect summary of the book
Looking back at the book blurb for Fire And Ice (Liam Campbell #1) by Dana Stabenow, I now realize this was a perfect summary of the book.:“Transferred in disgrace to this rough-and-tumble fishing town on the shores of Bristol Bay, Liam knows Newenham is the end of the line. It's also his last shot at getting his life back.. He's about to come in for a very rough landing. Stepping onto the airstrip at Newenham, Liam walks into a crime scene: a body torn apart by the propeller of a Piper Super Cub. As if that isn't enough of a welcome, the woman bending over the corpse is Wyanet Chouinard, the only woman Liam ever truly loved - and soon to be his prime suspect.”I found this book on one of the many freebie lists I get daily, and it had attractive qualities – murder mystery, romance, and suspense, the Alaskan wilderness - what’s not to like there?Well, the actual book did have a murder mystery, in fact it had more than one murder, and several incidents, that I wondered how they would fit into the overall plot. The backdrop theme of the book was the herring fishing season in Alaska, and how cut throat the business could be. The book was not suspenseful; it was more procedural, and a bit on the dull side, there was some humor (mainly surrounding Liam’s uniform), and in my opinion the romance was going nowhere fast (a one sided attempt to rekindle a past love affair). The author left no loose ends, connecting all of the incidents and murders into a logical plot by the books conclusion. The promised romance portion of the book was weak, and nonexistent, lacking a spark, chemistry, and emotional connection between Liam and Wy. I could see myself reading the 2nd book in the series just to see if the love connection is ever made( but not in the near future)The character development was thin, some back story was provided for Liam and Wy(explaining the challenge to the romance), and there was no descriptive Alaskan scenery. The author did spend quit a lot of time explaining the process of herring fishing, and plane spotting though. For me what could have been a outstanding read (given the Alaskan scenery, potential for excitement & suspense, a hot romance in a cold climate) turned out to be 2.5 – 2.75 star read, and that’s just because the author left no loose ends. I will note that there is no cliff hanger in this book, but there is also no HEA and that’s because the murder mystery is the books focal point, not the romance.

What a treat!!
I didn't know about this series until a mention of it on social media. Just another cracking good read; delightfully conflicted flawed characters and nuanced plot reveals. Between the Kate Shugak series and this one, I'm smiling at the thought of my next trip to Alaska.

A great read.
Like all of Danna Stabenow's novels, this is a great read, though I do like the Kate Shugak novels better. The Author's use of words is quite different to a lot of novels, and is refreshingly modern in that it contains humour as well as every-day use of words. Her descriptions of the countryside is quite remarkable and enlightening, I felt I was there and seeing it all for myself.A great read about investigating crime in the frozen wastes of Canada, as told by an expert in the area in which the story is told. For Dana Stabenow lovers, this is another great read.

Well written
It is so nice to read books that are well edited and written. Dana is by far one the best authors I have read lately.I like Liam and Wy. There is definitely enough details and twists in the storyline to keep you reading. The description of the herring fishing season was informative. I do not like to give the ending away in my reviews, but I need to say that I found Wy's greed illogical and self-sabotaging. So, in that respect, maybe the book could use some tweaking. Otherwise, a great read.

Alaskan whodunnit
Very enjoyable murder mystery with State Trooper as investigator. The setting adds greatly to the story as clearly Alaska is a bit different from other states, maybe from anywhere else…. Interesting characters, complicated backstory and a Shaman - irresistible!
