On Your Mark, Get Set, Go-Live!: The SMART Approach to implementing SAP

A "hands on approach to ERP Migration" with a proven technique
I must say after reading this book it makes migrating and implementing ERP look easy.I am currently an ERP consultant for a major avionics company in Southern California. I have more than 20 years experience in managing ERP operations and migrations at several companies big and small.Planning and people management are of the highest importance and in this book the Author covers both. The Author explains the importance of shipping the first day of go-live and the "SMART" advantage.I have worked with companies that didn't ship for 90 days after go-live because of superficial planning and lack of organizational skills. They thought they had good planning but when it came to where "the rubber hits the road" they had no road and the driver didn't know how to find it! What was worse they didn't know what to look for, as if they didn't understand how the ERP system worked. And they lost major OEM customers, and had millions dollars of orders canceled. With the "right" planning and having the "right people" they would have avoided this catastrophe. The Author has written a blue print for success. In this book the Author provides in-depth details and what it takes to do it right!By capitalizing on the Author's extensive experience and Common Sense Approach most migrations could go smoothly.Major Companies have lost Millions of Dollars and Customer Good Will trying to Go-Live and now the author has presented a technique to follow for success.Thank you Dan for sharing you in-depth knowledge with us.This is one book I will recommend to the Project Leader of every ERP migration I come across. Thanks again

Limited in its application
Slightly disappointed as I was looking for ideas for deploying ERP solutions generally. The author is basically talking about how his team rolled out an SAP Global Template, very quickly I admit, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. Its also all based around work done for one company, not rapid implementation techniques generally. I still read the whole book, and obtained 1 or 2 good ideas from it, but it wasn't a comprehensive set of ideas that would help any ERP PM deploy a solution at speed. So OK in what it said, but not really going to be a massive help for any ERP team unless you're rolling out a global SAP template and you can incorporate some of the authors ideas from the company he describes, into your rollout.
