This is an awesome songbook to get right into Grateful Dead tunes if you don't read sheet music or tablature. It's just lyrics and chords (guitar but it does show piano. Banjo and mando) All of this is assuming you know the tune. What I use it for is to get to know the song so I can improvise with the live recordings. Purists may find flaws, but I think it's well done for its purpose.

I first bought this song book on shakedown street back in the early 90s. I looked it up just for fun on Amazon and I was shocked to see it listed for sale! I have gone through and played some of the songs that I had long forgotten the chords to. Thanks again!

This book not only supplies lyrics but good chords, good meaning pretty accurate. I got several copies for dear friends which includes my band’s members. Together, we are Truckin’! Get the Jerry Garcia song book as well. You would only regret not doing so.

Really terrific book overall. The formatting is great, it keeps all the songs condensed into one page by reducing redundancy. It's easy to read and to play from. There are a few issues. For one, I noticed a few songs are missing. I'm not talking deep cuts, cause man does this book have some deep cuts! The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion) is not in this book. I couldn't believe one of Pigpens best songs isn't in this! A few songs are written in the wrong key, and some have lyric and chord errors that can make playing them difficult.Overall though, my expectations are easily met. The book is great and I would still recommend despite these things. But I hope they aren't serious that this is the final version!

Given as a gift to my son who had the white cover version, he has been enjoying playing from it, said music is written a bit different than how he played some tunes. Great purchase and gift!
