Would these clips work to hold short hair on top to make a straight across cut for self-hair cuts?

These clips work well, my hair is below shoulders however I think they would hold just as well for short as longer. They are made well.

can you use the clips with hair rollers

While I have used them to hold hair only, with the grip they have they certainly seem strong enough to be able to also hold a hair roller.

Can a few strands get inadvertently caught into the spring mechanism and pull at the hair?

It did not happen to me, even though I am fairly clumsy. Theoretically it could happen, but I used about six clips in a couple of areas of my hair, and no pulling occurred.
