These books have obviously not been writen for self-study, but if you already speak MSA reasonably well, these books will be very helpful. There is a list of words at the end of each book, but it isn't complete, so you will have to be intuitive and maybe ask an Egyptian friend when things aren't clear, but going abroad is a total immersion experience and no one expects to understand everything right away. I have found them enjoyable although challenging at times.
