Review Reviewed by Lily Apedaile of NSTA Recommends"This book stands out from other books of a similar subject matter because it contains many easy to implement lesson activities, the activities can be effortlessly adapted for many different subject areas and grade levels, and it gives many ideas on how to incorporate writing into the science classroom. With a focus on Common Core and incorporating writing into the science classroom, this book offers detailed lesson plans for activities that are completely writing based. These activities break the mold of the typical writing in the science class, i.e. lab report, by including creative writing styles such as skits, poems, and writing from a different perspective. This book offers writing activity ideas for grades 3-12. While many of the activities are particularly suited for grades 3-8, the author does suggest many ways to adapt the activities for different grade levels or subject areas. The activities in this book cover all the core disciplinary ideas in the NGSS so it is a great book for any Science teacher. The book is nicely formatted, making it easy to understand the lesson plans and how to implement each activity in the class. The author also suggests ways to differentiate each activity for different learning levels. If you are interested in finding new ways to incorporate writing into the classroom to better understand student learning, this book is a must read!" Review posted on 5/2/2016Review by Science Books & Films:"This volume answers the main question of the bookThe Two Cultures by C. P. Snow, first published in1959, which was how to respond to the wide gulfbetween science and English literature. By followingthe ideas well expressed in this creative volume, astudent can develop better writing skills and learnthe science involved along the way. Science topicsinclude life sciences, earth and space science, engineering, and physical science. This student andclassroom friendly book is aimed at grades 3-12,although some topics are more appropriate forthose in junior high or high school. The student candevelop writing skills in a range of styles, including:narrative/descriptive (Every Tree a Character ofTravel Blog About the Digestive System);persuasive/argumentative (Motivational Speech bya Part of a Cell); comic (Phytoplankton); poem(Earth's History or The Rock Cycle); Sci-Fi (WhatWould the World be Like if the KT Asteroid HadNever Hit?); skit/play (Interview With an Atom) andWater's Diary. Each of the 15 activities comes withstrategies for teaching a creative writing style. Eachsection includes writing models and listsconnections to the Next Generation ScienceStandards and Common Core State Standards.
