Million Dollar Habits: 10 Simple Steps to Getting Everything You Want in Life

Manual for Life
Robert Ringer's ten (10) Million Dollar Habits is the manual to life you've been looking for all your life. This is the best self-help book I've ever read and was far ahead of it's time. I have summarized the book below but recommend reading the book to better understand the principles through the war stories Ringer uses to illustrate the lessons learned as how the principles are applied in practice.1. Reality Habit: Maintain an accurate perception of reality. What you perceive as reality has to be checked because of the tendency to be deluded by erroneous beliefs. See Also David D. Burns, M.D. "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy."2. Attitude Habit: Developing an attitude to objectively evaluate alternatives and creative out-of-the-box thinking in the face of difficult situations. Keep in mind a Positive Mental Attitude with the four realities: a.) problems are a normal, integral, and ongoing part of the living experience, b.) there's an offsetting positive to every negative occurrence [the Natural Law of Balance], c.) the law of averages guarantees that if you just keep trying, sooner or later things will work out, and d.) through the power of the mind, a person possesses the capacity to draw to himself the things, people, and circumstances necessary to achieve his objectives. See Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich .3. Perspective Habit: Keeping problems in relative perspective, e.g., comparing day-to-day problems with true catastrophes (such as death of loved ones, life-long disability, or diseases) enables one to not panic unduly from more "normal" problems.4. Present Living Habit: Live in the present - identify what you enjoy doing and are naturally good at. Then, continuously seek opportunities that enable you to spend more time on these activities. Answer the following questions: a.) what do I enjoy, b.) what am I good at, c.) what do I want out of life, and d.) what is the price?5. Morality Habit: Morality is the recognition that every action has a consequence although the final result may be delayed. Taking short-cuts eventually come back to bite you and damage you in a variety of ways. What you say and believe should match what you do.6. Human Relations Habit: Human relations is underestimated and has a cumulative effect like compound interest. There are numerous ways to improve human relations including: brevity, compassion, assertiveness, discretion, closure, genuineness, refined behavior, responsibility & commitment, tolerance, value for value (win-win), decisiveness, self-sufficiency, and tact.7. Simplicity Habit: Simplicity in your life has a tremendous benefit of improving the efficiency of your efforts. Profit in life by charging the maximum the market will bear and minimize your expenses. You should evaluate your costs, time losses, and/or frustrations and let more grievances slide especially if there is no benefit in petty retaliation.8. Drain People Elimination Habit: Discontinue relationships with people that drain you of time, energy, or money because people judge you based on who you associate with and abusive people can't help but abuse due to their nature. Book indicates several types of abusive personality types like the Burr Person who is negative who thinks nothing you do can be done, the Changer who want to change you, the Chiseler, Conditional Person's whose gifts come with strings attached, the Deal Grabber, the Desperate, Destroyer who is negative and doesn't want anyone to succeed, Hallucinator, Liar, Rudemonger who is self-centered, Skinflint, and Legalman. See Dr. Phil's Life Code for more. Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World 9. Self-Discipline Habit: Don't make decision based on emotion or impulse but based on thinking through the consequences, i.e. Emotional Intelligence. See the book by Daniel Goleman Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ . Don't assume and always be prepared by a.) through research especially by reading all available documents, interviewing contacts, etc. and b.) full rehearsals of planned activities. If you slip and make an exception to any of the above habits then stop that behavior.10. Action Habit: Action is the most critical step in the execution of i.) an idea, ii.) preparation and planning, and iii.) acting because to produce results you have to act.Obstacles to action (first five are mental) includes: a) Resistance to change because of fear of unknown is unwarranted since change is often beneficial. b) Waiting for something to happen is not effective due to the law of inertia so if you want something to happen, you personally have to make it happen. Example: only 3 or 4 will respond positively to a cold call. Asking for something is often the difference between success and failure because the difference between success and failure is so small. c) Feeling overwhelmed is cured by carefully, choosing the most effective actions to take, i.e. prioritize tasks every day with you Franklin Planner. See FranklinCovey FDP3541914 Original Dated 2PPD Daily Planner Refill, January-December, 5-1/2 x 8-1/2, 2014 . The steps to not feeling overwhelmed are: i.) completely stop everything, ii.) get perspective and consider the real result of failure. If it isn't life or death then relax, iii.) Eliminate every and everyone who isn't essential, iv.) review priorities list and start somewhere, v.) do it now because the things in the calendar are closer than they appear, vi.) concentrate on only a single project at a time, vii.) pace yourself and don't be frantic because you don't want to make mistakes that slow you down, viii.) don't stop till it is finished. d) The "time is never right" excuse is procrastination and is cured by telling ourselves (and others) the truth. The cure is to make a list of the things you need to do, prioritize your list, and perform the actions right now no matter how long you've delayed or slipped, e.g. use a Franklin planner. e) Self-doubt is cured by first realizing that everyone suffers from self-doubt. The second step is to make an objective analysis of what would happen if you fail; what would be the maximum downside? Big deal if you will fail. Lessons learned from failure enabled you to become successful. All successful people where told that it couldn't be done and they were successful by not listening. f) Adversity is cured by realizing we can't control adversity, but we can control how we interpret it and how we respond to it. The law of balance tells us that every negative has a positive. Adversity gives us the opportunity to learn, grow, and become stronger. Long-term success through perseverance and persistence is through continual action. If you take no action, you may suffer consequences by default, i.e. opportunity costs. You need to take the initiative and take a chance by being proactive and not reactive because you lose control of the consequences when you are reactive. The steps to dealing with an adverse situation are: i.) move fast if disastrous implications, ii.) stop, calm down, and think through the problem, iii.) minimize the damage, i.e. damage control mode, by stabilizing the situation but don't throw good money after bad, iv.) get the big picture perspective, v.) focus on the crux of the problem and say no to everyone and everything distracting you, vi.) analyze what you did wrong, and vii.) implement a long term permanent solution and get on with your life with potentially an extreme change, i.e. meet the problem head on.

It's all about perspective
I read this book a long time ago and really liked it. So I decided to read it again and I'm glad I did. On this read, I made sure to jot down notes, mark pages, underline passages, and write in the margins. What I like most about this book is the practical nature of the insight. The title is misleading because this book is not about money. This book is all about mindset—a practical mindset. The 10 simple steps (reality, attitude, perspective, present living, morality, human relations, simplicity, drain people, self-discipline, and action) are indeed simple, but powerful and effective steps to successful living. If you're looking for a no nonsense and realistic view for creating a healthy mindset, try this book.

This book changed my life 15 years ago
This book changed my life 15 years ago. I never want to be without a copy so I purchased the digital version. I went from a quiet shy kid to a designer of scientific educational equipment, to a professional magician performing in from of thousands and then to build three successful businesses. I give a big part of my success to the early paperback version of this book.

You just don't get much better than this
What a treasure this book is and you owe it to yourself to discover it's wisdom. Robert Ringer writes and relays to you as a friend would be giving advice. Not original ideas but real life experiences on making the deep wisdom applicable to living a productive and successful life. I stumbled on to this book based on other people's reviews and I'm sure glad I did. It's one of the books you should read every year or two.

Up until I read this book i realized I was reacted recurring patterns and bad habits that prevented me from growing personally and growing my business. One of the best books I have ever read
First off, I will say that this book is different than "Million Dollar Habits" by Brian Tracy. I was looking for that book and ordered this one by mistake. It turns out that I was lucky to have made this error. The book is full of advice that is helpful and actionable. There is almost no fluff in this one.

good habits, certainly! worth 1M$ ? …uh, for him for sure.
NOT QUITE FINISHED, but enjoyable reading, this written in 1914, Ringer has become more of a sage, though his 10 steps have authenticity and meaning. Rhonda Byrnes (The Secret) has had some influence, (though not mentioned specifically) .But seems like he had a little trouble putting out a "new" book on the same themes he's always professed. As always, his own "bad" experiences (his wife giving birth 2 months early in the middle of nowhere without all the "modern" facilities, and the risks involved ) certainly gave him a "relative" look upon what we all consider "the worst" (usually financially problems).Good habits, certainly! worth 1M$ ? …uh, for him for sure. For the readers…. we'd ALL be millionaires it this were true.

Not a success book to read
This book was a suggested reading from a fantastic success book i've recently finished. I bought it straight away but to my disappointment, I do not like it at all! For a success book, it is wrote in such an aggressive manner and it feels as though the author used it as a way to vent. The first chapter sets the tone for the rest of the book, complaining and generally coming across in an aggressive tone. The contents however, is actually quite good! Although, there are many other books with the same content, written in a much better way. I would not suggest this book to anyone. I've read 5 chapters of the 10, and i've decided to stop as I feel its makes me angry each day (following suit from the tone of each chapter) as I read daily, every morning. This is not how I imagined a success book would be and I am deeply disappointment with the outcome.
