Can this valve remain in place all year or do I have to remove it during pool season?

These have a ball valve in them that allows water to flow in one direction only. They can stay in place all season (without the rubber cap). The only drawback to this is that you will not be able to aim the flow of water like you would with the eyeball type fitting that usually goes on the returns. I have these on my returns. They are pricey but they work.

Do these simply srew into the threaded return lines?

yes...the picture is deceiving.....that outer cover isn't included.

Does this come with the (cap wrench tool) that you use a 3/8" socket ratchet of your own to attach to the cap wrench to help install and remove?

Thanks... the original one I bought many years ago provided the cap wrench... curious... Q: What do you use to install and remove this check valve if no cap wrench was provided?
