I have one other question to the owners.. Does this have a mechanical hinge, or is it just plastic?

The Ammo Can has separate molded hinges. Two on the cover and two on the can. They are hinged with plastic pins on which allow for the opening and closing of the cover.

What size lock do you need for this ?

FYI - This ammo can does NOT fit a lock with a 3/8 in diameter shank. The 3/8in diameter shank is too large. The Master locks I purchased have a hexagonal shank - and this may be part of the problem - but I really don’t think so. You’ll need something smaller than 3/8 in.

Can this hold twenty 50rd boxes of 9mm, still in the box? Some reviews say yes, some say no.

Yes, depending on the size of the 50rd box. It easily holds 20 federal boxes per can. It easily holds 25 fiocci 50rd boxes but I had the handle fail due to the weight.

Is this a good storage can for 12 gauge shot gun ammo?

I fit 10 each, 25ct boxes (250) of 2-3/4" Federal #8 Target Load shot in this exact can. I removed all the rounds from the boxes and stacked them LOOSE in the ammo can... you won't fit much otherwise.Anyway, I could probably fit another LOOSE 25ct box but I like the easy 250.
