what is the longest knife, from tip to tip, that this will hold properly?

I have a meat cleaver in my bag and it holds it perfectly the pockets are very tightly knitted so any knife will sit I there with out falling out when open when closed my knives have never fallen out

Is it machine washable?

Yes... But the canvas will loose it's rigidity and wax seal.. I wash mine regularly.
