Do the holes in the sole allow small rocksand grit to get in?

The one in the heel… YES!!! I use these for my dog’s competition dockdiving and frequently need to walk across a gravel parking lot. The heel drain ALWAYS gets a rock stuck in it & its so annoying! That means digging the rock out of that drain hole. A BETTER DESIGN would be two smaller holes like in the front part of the sole.

Looking for a new pair of shoes for the river, do these shoes let rocks and sand in easily?

I absolutely love these shoes for the pool. However I wore them to standup paddle board at the river and had to constantly rinse out pebbles and shells from these shoes. Not great for lakes and rivers.

How do the 'hydro sport 2' compare with 'Ryka Hydro sport'?

I prefer Ryka Hydro Sport. I did try the Hydro Sport 2...I taught one water class in them. I found them to feel loose, less supportive and the back panel has no padding (unlike the first model). It cut in to my upper ankle area, leaving me with blisters. I returned them immediately and went back to the other model...I love those!
