This otoshi buta or drop lid is way better than using aluminum foil. It's quite rigid and made from rather thick leaves of stainless steel. The adjustable size is a great feature. Wish I had come across this sooner.

I would have given this a 5 star review if it didn't fold up on itself in the dishwasher. I cooked this drop lid with a Japanese pork and pumpkin recipe and it worked very well. I've put a twistie tie to keep it open in the dishwasher for the next use.

Keeps food submerged without needing a lid for your pot. It's stainless steel, so it doesn't rust.

Yes, it's for keeping things submerged when cooking them. It also works very well to keep ears of corn (in their husks) submerged in cold water prior to grilling. (Hubby figured that out, not me.) The disadvantage is that it can/will eventually rust. But this can work as a highly adjustable steamer and fit into various diameter pots. How did I cook without it?!
