So far, 5 stars if you know what you're doing
I purchased this drive to replace a failing one on a relative's Windows-based system. I also used the Acronis True Image WD Edition Software, downloaded from the manufacturer's site to clone the old drive. I was half-way through the installation when I thought, "What if I were just a general consumer and not a computer geek?" In other words, what if my relative had ordered this drive and tried to replace the old one without calling me? It probably would not have gone well, as it arrives as just a drive in a box, with no documentation or hints of what to do. The documentation on the manufacturer's Web site is fair, but maybe not enough for an average person off the street. With that in mind ... The installation went very cleanly. I had a spare SATA cable handy, which I needed during the replacement, and a SATA power Y splitter, which I did not need in this case. Those items do not come with the drive: You will have to purchase those separately if you need them. You may also need to buy 4 drive screws, but I personally did not need them for this installation either. I was going to use different software to clone the failing drive, but decided to use the utility provided by the manufacturer on their Web site. I Read The Friendly Manual and it worked very efficiently. After cloning, I removed the old drive and rebooted with only the new one. Everything was fine. I did not run any extensive diagnostics, but this new drive is relatively fast and quiet with no obvious defects so far. That was just a day ago, so I will leave my rating at 5 stars for now. Other reviewers have had quality and return problems after a few months and have submitted lower ratings. Hopefully, years will go by and I won't hear about any problems. The manufacturer makes kits providing additional documentation, cables and such if you need them -- but for me this purchase was a good option.

WD Quality still the best
Well, my last WD Black drive only lasted 2 years, but that's the nice thing about the 5-year warranty. I got this one as a mirror. The old drive started chattering loudly at 100% utilization during virus scans and backups about halfway through its short 2-year lifespan. One day it finally failed - first disconnected itself, and then when I reconnected, it appeared as "EMPTY." I first tried scandisk, and it fixed errors, but the disk now showed as full. I ran the free WD Diagnostics and it failed the short test, then on the long test, confirmed it had "too many bad sectors to recover." I read online to run chkdsk and do the full surface scan. It took 2 days to chug through the drive, but I got almost everything back. I had a backup drive copy, too, but I had a couple of things from that day that weren't backed-up...like my TurboTax file, which was almost complete (Murphy's law). I got back the most important files, bought this newer version of the same drive (the free replacement is now its mirror), and restored everything else from backup. This drive (and the replacement for my F1002 model) are running perfectly well, and I can't hear them over the fans, which is a nice change. I have one piece of advice when buying drives: get the highest rated drive with the longest warranty possible that you can afford. I got this one on sale. I thought about the 2TB or even 3TB versions, but I already have a 240GB SSD boot drive, and another 1GB drive (a Seagate that was a replacement for one that lasted 2 weeks - this one is a lucky one...I can tell :). Not to mention, 5TB of external drives, and a 3TB NAS, so why risk a bigger drive? Bottom line: good drive - fast, and quiet, and I sleep better with a 5yr warranty and a good backup!

In 20 years WD has proven itself reliable and reasonably priced.
I have for my own uses pretty much come down to this: NO other drive, or other new drive, unless it is a WD drive. Yes, they are that reliable and that good... plus, the price is right.... as long as you buy them using a degree of wisdom. Buy the right type of drive(life & use), the right physical size of drive(fit), the right characteristic of the drive for the use intended(speed), and from the right store (price). This is one of the best internal drives that WD makes right now (IMHO). It is fast, not THE fastest, but fast; it has a good sized cash memory built into it (64 MB) to help with speed and processing, and does not cost too much either! Possibly, from what I have seen, right now.... this specific drive just may be the best bang for the buck that is out there! Some are faster, but require 3 or 4 times the money too! Some are larger too, and the same applies to cost. No one out there has a better or longer warrantee than WD drives do. WD does not "lavish" customer service on us, but they ARE there if you need them!! You just need to apply a bit of effort now and then to get it. Good people! How can you go wrong? Buy with confidence. Enjoy!

Good Drives - Packaging needs improvement.
Theses hard drives have always been good. My only complaint is the packaging. Two came in the box - bare drives in nothing more than the anti-static bags and some strips of 'air pillows' with only two that were still inflated. the drives were basically loose and free to bang around in the box. Not a good idea anytime, but probably an even worse idea with the volume of packages that USPS was dealing with right after Thanksgiving. No way to really tell if there was any damage to the hard drives until they are actually put in use, and even then, it might not show up immedaitely.

but this thing does WAY better than I expected when I ordered it and sure ...
This drive is VERY fast... much faster than I expected. I use it for long-term storage, but I have to say it competes with my SSD drives that I use for boot / installs / function. Of course a disk drive cannot truly match the speed of an SSD, but this thing does WAY better than I expected when I ordered it and sure seems to come close. I was only looking for something to hold larger amounts of data, and it didn't have to be especially fast about it. I have not perf tested it per se, but just in seeing it in action: I'll copy a 20-30GB file to it, and it seems to burst the first GB or two in just a second or two. The remainder of the file copies at about 200Mb-240Mb / sec. Way better than I was anticipating. Anyway, I'm no perf tester, but I am very pleased with this thing (have used for about a month). If you need a big drive that might also serve as your boot drive, and can't afford a monstrous SSD -- this is your answer. Western Digital has always been solid to me. I've been buying their products for 20+ years and have never had one crash. (IMHO: Stay away from any drive that rhymes with Fleagate -- I've seen more than a few of those crash).

Western Digital proves a solid choice yet again!
So far so good! Purchased this two months ago to replace a failed hard drive in my MacPro, and it's working beautifully. It is my PRIMARY hard drive, not an add-on or just additional storage. This is serving as the heart and soul. When my husband opened up my computer to swap out the drives, we discovered that all of my drives are Western Digital, which goes to show how solid they are, as my computer is a 2006. In other words, the original Western Digital drive lasted nine years of solid, daily use. I chose this particular model after extensive research, BTW. Not all disks are designed to be used as the main hard drive, but this one, according to my research, is a good choice for a main disk. Update: This drive has been in operation for almost a year. The computer stays on 24/7 with daily, ongoing business usage of no less than 40 hours active use per week and often quite a bit more. This serves as the main drive and it is still going strong as one would expect it to be. I am adding this update because when I first purchased the drive, I read hundreds of reviews across several products and I remember reading reviews where drives failed after a couple of months. I do not recall the brands/models of those drives, but to help people reading reviews looking for the same info, I've added this update.

Beautiful HDD and Fast speeds!
People really diss on HDD's which is quite unfortunate but to be honest they are better than many say and I can say that because I've bought thie and while many head for SSD's you should consider this whether it be for gaming or for storage. I had an old HDD 1TB which noticeable it was failing on me and made it impossible to load anything in a timely matter which at one point it told me the drive had failed and attempted to reboot. That lead to the purchase of this which was mine breaking cause it was so much faster loading almost everything games, files, storage it did really well. I also used this to build my PC and it was amazing!

Excellent upgrade for a Regular old hard drive, not a SSD replacement.
Significantly faster sequential performance than the wd blue. Very satisfied with the build quality and performance. This drive is basically an older RE series drive from wd made for consumers, has extra features the blue lacks which i suggest u check on wd's website before purchase. Packaging is horrible from cloud tail. try to buy from some other seller if possible.

Good hard drive.
This hard drive will be used to replace my source drive on an older Windows 7 computer when the older drive fails. One of the best drives you can buy, I have used WD Black drives for over 8 years now and they still haven't failed. Very dependable.

Good value for money
The product is reliable. I prefer 1TB HDD to larger capacity HDD so as not too risk a large amount of files in one large HDD. I use multiple 1TB HDD with backup.
