The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques

This one goes in the knitting bag, not on the shelf
First, my copy doesn't look anything like the photo here. It has a wonderful covered spiral that is very appropriate for use while you're actually knitting. I've been carying this one around with me ever since I got it. Since I've forgotten what my GM and Aunties tried to teach me when I was little, and I just recently picked up this obsession again, I consider myself to be self-taught, or book-taught. I just never learned advanced techniques, and I really need the pictures to show me what to do. There are no classes available in my little out of the way town. The lovely little church-lady expert that helps me out, well, I just don't want to bug her at 1 AM! In no time, I was doing more professional looking garments, and making items that my family will actually wear in public. They're "custom made and designed" now, not just home-made.The book includes Cast-ons and Bind offs as well as all kinds of increases, decreases, seams, picking up stitches, borders and bands. It even has about 8 different kinds of buttonholes. Then there's the techniques that I had never heard of before: I-cord, and knitted shoulder pads, and a very unbiased discussion on the different uses of flat knitting versus circular knitting. And finally, the worksheets help get you on the right path to keeping track of what you plan on doing. An index is the only thing missing from this book.

Love that it lies flat when open.
I especially like the lie-flat binding which makes the book easier to refer to. Also appreciate the comments of benefits and downsizes of techniques.

Great Techniques for All Knitters
I have been knitting for nearly fifty years, yet was so happy to find this book of finishing techniques...a great reference! "Finishing" is kind of a misnomer, since the book includes well-illustrated and adequately described techniques and directions from the start to the finish of your project. There are many different cast-on methods, for different purposes; selvage edges; hems; bind-offs; buttonholes; short rows; more types of seams than I knew existed; and much more. The volume is spiral-bound and compact enough to carry in your knitting bag. Wish I had bought it sooner...a great gift for yourself or a knitting friend!

Great book but misnamed!
This is a great book for knitters who are trying to improve their skills. I bought it because my finishing skills need to be improved. However, the finishing techniques are not as detailed as I would have liked. But this book is much more than a finishing book. It is an excellent instruction book for at least intermediate knitters or perhaps someone who just wants to have their projects look a bit more professional.I have used it again and again. Different ways to increase and decrease are well explained.I can't give it five stars because the book doesn't really do what it says it does. But I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knitting.

Fabulous reference
I've been knitting for over a decade, and only just bought this book a month ago. I keep finding it on the table next to my knitting spot, instead of on the bookshelf where it belongs! I pull it out to decide which increase or decrease to use, to remember which bind-off will look best on the thing I'm knitting, or to figure out what the edging will do before I put it on the sweater. It's a very simple book, with clear diagrams of basic techniques, including the pros and cons of each one. Many other books contain the same information. This one is easy to refer to over and over.

The absolute best book for a knitter
The absolute best book for a knitter. I have been knitting and teaching knitting for over 50 years, and this is the book I tell all my students to buy, if they want to keep improving. It not only tells how to do something but tells you why one would and even more importantly, why one would not want to use this technique. The spiral binding lets it lay flat on a table while you try to come to grips with a procedure. but the cover keeps it from tangling with your yarn if carried in you knitting bag.Altogether, if you want to become an experienced and good knitter, not only buy this book, but read and use this book.

A bit overpriced
I have to say this because I already own some other finishing books of knitting. This one is sadly lacking in content. It covers about 6 cast ons and bindoffs, increases, decreases, buttonholes ,buttonbands and hems, seams and some odds n ends. When I compare this to Big book of knitting, knowledgable knitter etc,the information is less, but the price is more.Where it does help is giving pros and cons of each type of technique. This book is meant for new knitters only, more experienced ones will find other books more to their liking.
