SERIOUSLY? ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT THE SAME CROSSBOW I GOT?
Are people actually getting the product I got? A) Assembly is required. No instructions in package, but a bit of jiggering around got it all sorted out. Tighten with the allen wrench! Use the plastic block, by making sure THAT is the part the Allen screw touches! B) Be sure to string it correctly! The plastic ends go on FIRST! Then, string the bow! C) It is a real ***** to string by yourself UNLESS you have strung a bow before. Then, it's just strength! D) This is NOT A TOY! Holy moley, I lost the first bolt, (shot it straight up) and it must have gone about 100 meters! E) Lethal. Lethal as a snake. BE VERY CAREFUL! F) I paid about $15 USD. I would buy twenty of them, just to never run out! New strings are about $10 USD for 3. Put a laser on this ****** and kill anything in front of you!

Good Quality...but...
The crossbow itself appears to be of very good quality; however, you're gonna definately need replacement strings. The instructions say to "have a friend help" while putting the string on that comes with the crossbow; I was able to actually get it on myself after a bit of a struggle. Fired it off once and the arrow went through 4 pieces of cardboard - and I didn't even have the arrow all the way back underneath the pin that holds it in place. The second time I went to fire it (about 2 weeks later), I had the arrow all the way back so I'd get maximum thrust, and as I pulled the trigger, the left side plastic tip that holds the string on shattered... So anyway I've ordered a couple extra sets of strings; they're cheap enough. We'll see if it happens again. I know the strings don't last forever, but it shouldn't have shattered on my 2nd shot.

strong enough to be dangerous but not effective as a weapon to hunt or defend
Not as bad as some of the reviews say, the assembly is not super difficult but can be better. I added a penny to buffer the screw pressing against the pressure pad keeping the limb in place. The sight is a bit flimsy but can be stabilized with some padding below the plastic ramp (I used a piece of silicone cover). The tension on the limb is pretty strong, not very easy to string with just one person, can be done if you leverage your body weight but be careful not to break the plastic tips where the strings are latched on to. I personally got different plastic tips than the ones shown in the picture, they fit snuggly but I recommend superglue to really keep them attached to the limb. Using a luggage weight the crossbow measures about 42 lbs about half an inch before the string is latched into it’s fully drawn position so the strength is not too far off (probably even higher pressure if I can get the measurement closer to fully drawn). The shot isn’t as fast as I imagined but the bolts will pierce two layers of the standard Amazon box cardboard, buried to the plastic fletching. I’ve fired about 10ish times and the crossbow held up pretty well so far, got it for about $32 with tax in March 2025, doubt it’s effectiveness as a weapon but don’t discount it’s danger if handled improperly.

Avalanche 50-lb. Pistol Grip Crossbow from BudK
Received the item from BudK in a timely fashion. BudK's item description says the pistol frame is metal covered in plastic. When I assembled the crossbow, per instructions, to the front of the pistol grip I used a screwdriver with an allen wrench tip and tightened the set bolt in the front by hand. I tightened the screw without over-tightening but the frame snapped revealing the frame to be all plastic with no metal core. In all, the crossbow portion is thin stamped metal and looks flimsy. It has no set grooves or other allingment aid so you have to guess, measure, or hope that the cross bow is centered correctly onto the frame. The frame front is weak (as demonstrated by the break during assembly) and one has to question, if it had not snapped in the first place, would it have been a safety issue when firing the crossbow? As to the performance... I'll never know - didn't even get a chance to fire the thing. As for the company... As usual BudK was very helpfull. They immediately issued a full refund and were willing to go the extra mile as is their custom. My negative comments are about the item only, not BudK. I have dealt with BudK in the past. I've always been happy with their service. Will I deal with them in the future? You Betcha!!!

reasonably sturdy for the price
Seemed ok, reasonably sturdy for the price. Bought it just to mess around so my expectations were low. One of the string holder tips flew off on my first shot and is now lost in my backyard somewhere. That being said, haven't been able to try it out much, as I've yet to get additional string holder tips. Having a helluva time finding a way to order only those. The bolts that came with it are fairly cheap so I had already ordered additional, better ones.

Much better than anticipated!
I've always wanted a crossbow, just never needed one but always thought would be fun target practice. Saw this little bow on special for about $8, with shipping along with another product came out to almost $15, ..pretty inexpensive, so I was not expecting much. Got it for myself for my 44th b-day (my wife and others give stuff I don't even really want like cologne) ...anyway, got it in, put it together in a jiffy (not sure why others have probs with getting the bow strung, is easy, just leverage against something sturdy) Well, this little bow is much more solid than I would have thought for the price. It has been loads of fun so far! Fires swift and accurate. Is not a toy! In a nutshell very pleased with the purchase and may be ordering another one of these just to have an extra when friends are over. This is a good little starter bow. I'd also ordered some extra aluminum bolts for it, which work well, but I think the plastic ones that came with it are just as good and maybe even a bit more accurate.
