The way these stories were meant to be told
This was the way these classic tales were told before Disney re-wrote and cleaned them up. Interesting reading for a teenager but some of the tales are not suitable for a young child to hear as a bedtime story. The artwork is nice. Don't expect Disney style artwork. The artwork illustrations shows Cinderella's step sister cutting her toes off and heel off with a knife and there is a pop up design of a huntsman gutting and pulling grandma out of the wolf's abdomen in "little red riding hood". The pop ups are appropriate for the stories but simple in design. Don't expect an elaborate Matthew Reinhart or Robert Sabuda pop up book. The paper engineering is simple, nice and different than any other pop up book i own, but not spectacular or breathtaking as far as the paper engineering goes. Still i'm glad to have this book as part of my pop up collection.

Scary and funny, yes it is possible.
These are the Grimms' Fairy Tales as I read them in my childhood, violent, sinister, and wonderful. These are not the watered down versions usually found in bookstores today. This edition collects eight of them together with seven pop-ups. The illustrations, by Vladimir Stankovic, are appropriately whacky, unusual, and memorable. While the paper engineering, by Alan brown, may not be the most intricate or breathtaking they are, nonetheless, sophisticated, eerily enticing, and strangely appropriate for this particular version of the text . As a declaration, I dislike our saccharine versions of these tales of consequence and far prefer the Grimms' tales as they were originally, yes, even as a child. I do recall being scared but a few minutes with an appropriate adult and the tales made sense. It is, therefore, no surprise that I heartily endorse this edition as both a relief from and an antidote to the sweet ones!

Uncensored Fairy Tales Is Where It's At
I believe in the original stories versus the watered-down Disney versions of fairy tales. I love these tales and the art, and so does my 5-year-old daughter.

Well I love the stories
Well I love the stories. I hate the illustrations. And some of them may be a little too gruesome for the younger crowd such as the wolf belly being laid wide open with grandmothers legs sticking out. Additionally all of the characters have flushed noses which makes them look like drunks. For the price of the book I did expect a higher quality product

Awesome artwork for timeless stories
Fantastic illustrations from Serbian artist Vladimir Stankovic. The Grimm's tales come along with folding pages that are designed with much detail.
