Poles only have a few height choices
I purchased 2 of these one for a 5 ft closet and one for a 6ft closet. It was easy to install, but one of the boxes had a hole and was missing a pole.Lucky our local home Depot sells extra parts. It fit really well in our 6 ft closet but I had to go to home Depot and get diffent poles with more height choices for the 5 ft closet. It fit well in the 5ft wide closet but if you use the poles that come with the set you don't have enought room to hang adult size clothes. It is perfect for child clothing though.Overall very durable and fairly easy to install, just make sure you use a level!

Inexpensive Alternative to Single Wire Shelf.
Better than the single wire shelve it replaced. BUT Closetmaid should clarify the installation instructions. The dimensions for the wall anchors are supplied for the 8 foot closet . Also you have to choose WHAT size to cut the 3 shelves for your closet size from the supplied 48" length. They neglect to specify what dimension the 2 support poles are to be? Other than there is supposed to be 1 1/2" overlap on each size of the 18" center shelf. As a mechanical designer I definitely could have composed better instructions, but...I shouldn't have to. My wife seemed satisfied with the additional storage it supplied.

Easier than other reviewers said it'd be
I made the mistake of ordering this as a "Used-Like New" item. After I spent an hour pulling everything out of my closet, I opened the box to lay everything out and begin installing it. That's when I discovered that despite the "Inspected by Amazon" sticker, there were several things missing from the kit, including one of the 3 main shelves, a bunch of mounting brackets, and the instructions. I. Was. Pissed!! So I immediately printed a return label. But I still needed to do something about my closet, and fast. So I re-ordered it but as a brand new kit. When it arrived, I opened the box to take inventory, happy to see everything was there. Then, I set about reading the instructions a couple times, making sure I knew what I needed to do, had the tools I needed to do it, and that I could do it all by myself. My dad was a phone call away, but I wanted to do it on my own. And it came out exactly as I hoped. So I'm not sure why other reviewers complained that it was difficult, even impossible, to install. I even had to change the height spacing of one shelf to have enough room to hang long blouses. All I had to do was re-measure the bracket spacings on the wall and drill a small hole in one of the poles. No biggie. Now my closet is gorgeous! (Yes, I did paint the back wall a bright turquoise and stenciled in a small cluster of silver stars. Because I could.) My dad stopped by the next day, and took a look. He was impressed by how sturdy, level, and roomy it all turned out. In fact he said, "Don't let your mom see this, or I'm going to have to put one up in her closet next."So, if you need to overhaul your closet, I would suggest buying a new kit - NOT USED! - and make sure everything that's supposed to be in the box, is. If you can, take your closet doors off. Read and re-read the instructions, gather the necessary tools, and take your time. It's not rocket science.Oh, and yes, you can modify/customize this to have the double shelves on either the left or right side of your closet. Or even buy 2 kits and really go crazy. I added another shelf that I purchased separately, and still only used one of the poles, instead of two. It's just as sturdy and suits my needs better.

Not bad for the money - revised, broke after 5 years
UPDATE 2018: purchased in 2013, it broke in 2018, revised from 4 stars to 2. In hindsight, I am not surprised. The shelves are supported by small plastic clips - one of those broke. Some might say 5 years use is not bad, but keep in mind that now I have to remove all the contents, take this unit down, repair all the holes, repaint the walls, pay for a new unit, and install a new unit (which, trust me, won't be ClosetMaid). In my opinion, don't buy this unit, don't buy ClosetMaid. For the money, not a bad option. Nice mixture of hanging space and shelf space. Much more solid and sturdy than I anticipated (of course, if you install it wrong, the unit won't be this sturdy so installation is important).Top shelf is quite high and most people won't be able to put anything up there without a small step ladder. You will need a power drill and a level and you need to know how to use them. Don't be under the impression you can install this unit without those tools. Measurements need to be precise so if that's not your strength, make sure someone with that strength is available to help you with that.Instructions are confusing. I had to keep reading them over again and again and I usually don't have that much trouble. So if following instructions and deciphering diagrams is not your strength, make sure someone with that strength is there to help you.I installed this unit by myself and it worked out fine, but two people would be better and would have saved me some time (probably a lot of time). You work a lot with the level and marking lines and this is best with two people. If you have anything besides an 8' closet, you will need to cut the shelves with a hack saw (so you need to have a hack saw, and the "know how" and muscle to use it). Note, you can leave the shelves long, but you'll lose some hanging space. If you do decide to cut the shelves, make sure you don't cut them too short - they must reach past the center pole so the pole can reenforce them.If you have anything besides an 8' closet, note you will get markedly less hanging space. This should go without saying, of course, but even though I knew my closet was 5' and the picture was 8', I was still surprised and disappointed at the amount of hanging space I ended up with. I can't really blame the manufacturing for that, but perhaps they could show pictures of 5', 6' and 7' foot closets too.You don't get any option as to height of shelves and the hardware is for drywall. If you happen to hit a stud, you'll have to find a way to deal with that.If I had spent more on this unit, I'd probably be disappointed but I think for the money, it's not a bad option. If you need a closet organizer and don't want to spend a lot and you're OK with everything I've written above, go for it!UPDATE 2018: purchased in 2013, it broke in 2018, revised from 4 stars to 2.
