A Million Ways to Die in the West [DVD]

This is one of my favorite funny movies! I rented it because I already enjoy Seth MacFarlane’s humor from Family Guy, and seeing that same type of comedy thrown into an old Western setting had me cracking up. 😂 The jokes, the characters, and the way they make fun of how crazy life would’ve been during that time are hilarious. It’s definitely not a serious Western and it’s silly, inappropriate, and ridiculous on purpose, which is exactly why I love it. If you like Seth MacFarlane’s style of comedy, this one is worth watching.

Very funny but given the language it is an adult show. It is very funny!

Well, the negative critics did it again. They crapped all over a film that didn't deserve it. You'd think that by now, these people would know what a Seth MacFarlane show is all about. But oh, no. They still sit down and watch one of his programmes/films and are completely "surprised" by the crude humour, potty jokes, etc. Then they get on line and complain about it. You know, people, all you need do is a bit of an intelligent search for MacFarlane to see exactly what kind of work he produces. There! Problem solved! No more stupid surprises! Anyway, I enjoyed this film precisely because it is a typical MacFarlane work. It has all the crude and VERY funny humour we fans have come to expect from the man. It also has the typical drama that always manages to feel an integral part of the story, regardless of how many fart, dick and death jokes he throws into the mix. And this is why I like his works. The humour always seems to come from the circumstances. It isn't just tossed in as an afterthought. This isn't Monty Python, where the humour can just show up unannounced out of left field and have little connection with the context of the programme (although I enjoy Python humour as well). MacFarlane's humour always feels part of the story. Such as the bit about the ice block falling and crushing a worker's head. Yes, it's crazy gory; yes, it's a shock; yes, it's stomach churning; but yes, it's also funny as hell. It comes out of the situation and feels natural. This is the same story design MacFarlane uses in The Orville, and it works there also (Idiot critics didn't like The Orville either, and they were wrong there, too). Humour rising out of the daily horrors of life. We all know what the best comics say about the best humour: it rises out of the worst pain. MacFarlane obviously understands this and has mastered how to utilize this principle very well. I also enjoyed all the surprising cameos sprinkled throughout the film. And the panoramic cinematography is just stunning, genuinely a work of art. And he didn't have to do that. He deliberately made sure the images would be as beautiful as possible, while driving home the fact that amid all this breathtaking beauty there existed the horror of agony and death around every turn. From what I've read and learned about life even a mere 100 to 200 years ago, this is actually how life was -- a horror show. Even in the big, "civilized" cities, life was very hard, horribly dirty, dangerous, disease-ridden and terrifying. It helps explain why the average lifespan was so incredibly short, compared with today. These days, we're used to many people living even a century. Back then, a century of life would be considered an absolute miracle and utterly unusual, with all the thousand little things waiting to take your health or your life. In this respect, the film gets it absolutely right. So, it holds no surprise for me that MacFarlane can glean so much humour out of circumstances so dismal and bleak. Humour out of pain. Works every time.

This is a comedy film showing another view of how things were in the Arizona Territory in 1882. I love that the film shows spectacular views of the beautiful Monument Valley areas of Arizona. You will recognize these scenes that have been used in many color and black & white western movies in the past. The gorgeous views are accompanied by beautiful orchestra music, similar to what has been used in popular western movies from the past. The comedy is hilarious and brought many a laugh to me. However it is important to note that the film is rated 'R' because the film uses sex and dirty words that can easily be upsetting to some people and or groups who might be offended, and even consider it pornographic. It is not a film for children but, it does a great job showing the west in a different way that brought me many laughs. In fact, I had to watch it more once to get some of the comedy lines, which was easy to do because the scenery and music are so spectacular. Well, that's about all I have to say now . . . I think I'll go watch it again now, I like the laughs.

I have wanted to see this for a long time. I like the type of humor this guy does. I have owned this for a bit. I’ve just had a lot of movies on our DVR. I have an hour and fourteen minutes left. Here is my opinion so far. I will finish this tomorrow. So, the movie is set in the 1800s. It takes place in the Wild West. A mans girlfriend leaves him. Somehow, the man she is with now, and he, set up a gun match. You know, draw! The movie is about him getting ready. It just so happens that a new lady arrives and decided to help the man learn to shoot. He is very bad at it. Other things come into play. They have to do with the lady and her companions. I do not want to ruin anything. The movie has the same type of humor that Family Guy does. Crazy, off the wall type stuff. At times, they will just show a scene with something happening to someone. No point or reason. Just wackiness. It is all rather funny. I just laughed and laughed. Now, why the three out of five? Well, so far, this is my problem with the movie. I guess I should say problems. The cast, not one of them seems to be connected at all. There is no emotion, no connection, just people talking. It feels like I am watching a continuation of skits. It is a shame. There are so many good actors. As I said, this is slapstick. It is funny so far. But, the problem is this. Now, maybe it is the writing, maybe it is the acting. It could be a combination of both. But, whenever they start talking about something serious, my god, it just seems to drag on and on and on. I think the movie sets your mind into a specific expectation. You set yourself in this mode and when the movie switches, your mind is not ready for it. I kind of just faded away when they talked. I guess I could say when they babbled. I am watching the unrated version, which is 2 hours and 14 minutes. Maybe that is the thing. I will have to finish the movie, so I can do the same with the review. Ok, I finished the movie last night. It really was funny. It had an ending that made me smile. A lot of the stuff in the movie seemed to work it self out. It was all good. Now, for things that I do not think worked. I said earlier, that the cast seemed to not at all be on the same page. I think now, it is for the fact that everyone, even the people you only would see for a minute, had such odd, stand-outish personalities. Everyone seemed important in the small town. Maybe if they had not tried so hard to make each character memorable, it would have been better. I watched the special features. I know MacFarline is a great music guy. I love the movie in his other stuff. I did like the music in the movie. But, to me, it just did not fit. It felt like I was watching a sci-fi movie, or a horror. I believe, there were to many of one thing. It was either wind or string instruments. It just over did everything. The song that played as the end credits rolled, I think that song fit the movie best. I am not talking about the words or what the song was about. I mean the type of music and the way the vocals sounded. I don’t know. Just something about the music didn’t work. I said that the parts in which they would talk about serious stuff just seemed to drag on and on. It did not really seem that way in the end. The last few things flowed better than they did at first. So, there it is. Also, there are some fun special features. The longest is like ten minutes and something. Not bad. You find out some interesting things. I am 100% happy with my purchase of the movie. I will watch it many times throughout my life. Ok, this is a bit pointless I guess. MacFarlines character says something in the movie. It is about some disease. His character says something like “it is just another way that God shows us how much he loves us.” I am not offended by it. Everyone has his or her views. I never really believed in stuff like that. Someone killed me in 03. There was my dad and God. Kind of changed the way I think. The thing I wanted to say is this. I know someone who thinks the same way. If there were a God, why would he let people suffer and die? I believe the reason for that is free will for one. People live their lives the way they wish. The way you live sets up your life. Would people be happier if they had to follow strict guidelines? Two evolution. Think about it. If people never died, that would have to mean that people would eventually stop being born. The earthy would get far to full. If there were a set number of humans, and that was it. How would anything ever grow? Things change in the world because new people come along, see what was and make what is. You live, you die, others continue. That seems like the best way for things to be. Finally, to allow humans to live forever would not be enough. People would start to hate each other. Always seeing the same people. No change. So, you would also have to allow people to love and never hate or fight. Never get sick. What if you got cancer? You would have to suffer forever. Nobody would be able to ever create a way to fix the disease, for the fact that there was no evolution. If people want a life, with peace, no death, no sickness, no bad things and think that is the way life should be, then why would God have even made an Earth for humans to live on? He would just have had everyone exist in Heaven. That is just something I wanted to say. I know nothing about the bible or any of that stuff. It just felt like something important for me to say. Again, I have no problems with jokes, religion, political views or anything. I just knew right away that I wanted to say what I said. There it is. Peace. Oh, I did love the setting of the movie. I do not think I have ever watched a western. Everything was beautiful. Also, if they made another movie that went with this story, I would be very excited to see it. I really like this movie. But, there were just some things that seemed to not fit. This the 3 out of 5.

La película me parece muy divertida. Charlize hace un papel maravilloso 😱. Una pena que la versión alemana no contenga nada de español!!! Pero al menos sirvió para practicar el inglés 😜.

Eine Kollegin empfahl mir diesen Film mit den Worten, das sei genau mein Humor. Ich weiß noch nicht genau, ob ich mich jetzt geschmeichelt oder beleidigt fühlen soll, aber sie hatte Recht. :o) Ich bin mit Bud Spencer, "Auf dem Highway ist die Hölle los", "Die 2", "Kottan ermittelt" und anderen Meilensteinen des frohgemut angewandten Irrsinns aufgewachsen, insofern ist mir derbe hirnrissiger Gaga-Humor schon recht. Der Humor hier ist derbe, teils vulgär, teils unappetitlich, immer krass, nie "politisch korrekt", und kommt meist unerwartet. Springt einem sozusagen, während man leichten Sinnes seines Weges schlendert, aus der nächstbesten Mülltonne mit dem nackten Hintern ins Gesicht. Quasi. Anders als z.B. neuerdings bei Tarantino, kommt das hier allerdings so augenzwinkernd und selbstironisch daher, daß man sich nie als Augenzeuge der inneren Abgründe der Macher fühlt, sondern immer als jemand, der zu einer Sause eingeladen wird, die er bitte bloß nicht ernst nehmen soll. Wenn der Satz "Der will nur spielen!" jemls gepaßt hat, dann zu diesem Film. Dieser Film hat "Achtung! Nicht ernst nehmen!" auf dem T-Shirt stehen und entwaffnet jede Kritik an seinem nicht vorhandenen Niveau, in dem er grinsend mit dem Daumen darauf deutet und fragt : "Welchen Teil hast du nicht verstanden?" Wer damit umgehen kann, wird hier reich beschenkt; alle anderen sollten lieber bei "Twilight", "50 Shades of schlecht" und sonstiger Leichtberieselung bleiben. :-) Anyway – womit ich überhaupt nicht gerechnet habe, ist der Umstand, daß sich unter dem dicken Panzer aus "voll in die Fresse"-Brachialhumor ein zart schlagendes, durch und durch romantisches Herz verbirgt, und zwar in Gestalt einer bewegenden Parabel um wahre Werte, Selbstachtung, Respekt und Freundschaft. Jedenfalls in der Originalfassung, keine Ahnung, was davon in der deutschen Synchro übriggeblieben ist. Wem das Thema "grundguter, naiver Loser trifft auf starke Frau, die das Herz auf dem rechten Fleck hat, und findet mit ihrer Hilfe zu sich selbst" schon in "Der Sternwanderer" gefallen hat, dem wird hier das Herz genauso aufgehen. Allen anderen bleibt immer noch das tieffliegende Dauergewitter aus absurd-geschmacklosen Todesarten, Fäkalhumor und breit grinsender Mißachtung jeglichen guten Geschmacks. Also: Eine klassische Win-Win-Situation. :D
