Seems like a nifty item; however, the user manual says to remove the protective cover before using.I find no protective cover.Is one not needed and the user manual was not updated or should I have one? Inquiring minds want to know.

This item was defective out of the box. It will only throw up the red ERR, meaning it can't get a good reading. This is trying it away from the forehead, and against the forehead (as shown in the instructions). I tried it on multiple family members as well, with the same results. I tested the batteries that came with it (they were good), and then replaced them just for fun - still only reads ERR. Unfortunately, I noticed after the fact that this cannot be returned to Amazon...you have to call Braun. I tried several times to call Braun, and gave up after being on hold for more than twenty minutes each time. I could not find an online way to contact Braun, so I am resigned to simply throwing out what is functionally a useless piece of plastic.

We’ve had this for 2 years and it has been accurate enough that we stopped double checking with rectal thermometer.

Accurate temps

Does not appear to be intended for personal use. I assumes your using it on a child and you have to identify the age of the patient each time you use it. Sometimes it takes a reading but the screen backlight is turned off so its nearly impossible to read. Good for kids - not for adults.

This thing is great. You do have to get very close to the forehead to get accurate readings.One tip for everyone - when I first turned mine on it just kept saying “ERR” and I couldn’t even see the default screen the manual referenced. The troubleshooting guide had no mention of “ERR” displaying on startup, only during temperature readings. I was about to pack it up for return and decided to take the batteries out and toggle this small tiny switch in the battery compartment from F to C. Magically it turned on without an error. Then I took the batteries out and flipped it back to F (for Fahrenheit). Voila! It now powers up fine every time. Not sure if the switch shifts in transit and wasn’t fully locked in to either F or C to start or if indeed what I did is the only way to get it out of the “ERR” state. I hope this helps someone, since it looked like two other reviewers had the same problem and were thinking of returning it. We’re now very happy with this device!
