This is the long awaited successor to Alfa's popular AWUS036H. The AWUS036NHR utilizes a new 802.11n chipset from Realtek (RTL8188RU) and is light years ahead of its predecessor. Alfa's AWUS036NHR combines the fast speed of 802.11n with long range reception for both 802.11g and 802.11n standards. This Device is the best Alfa has Produced yet. If you’re built-in Wi-Fi adapter is not picking up your Router or if you are trying to pick up Wi-Fi from long distances then this is the device to get! The AWUS036NH Receiver sensitivity will allow you to connect from greater distances and get stronger signals to Wi-Fi networks around you. With maximum speeds of 150 mbps to 802.11n routers, AWUS036NHR is also a perfect solution for video streaming, large downloads, and online gaming. Windows 7 users can easily turn AWUS036NHR into a simultaneous access point using Connectify, a free program Most Network Adaptors can get great Range and sensitivity when the router that they are receiving form is set to "N-only" mode which blocks backward compatibility with B and G adaptors but most people are not able to set the router to N-only mode as this would block connectivity for G-only devices like iPhones, Android phones, and many DVRs. This AWUS036NHR is one of the first Wi-Fi adapters to get very good receive sensitivity to both 802.11n-only, 802.11n/g mixed, and 802.11g networks Features - Compatible with IEEE 802.11n, 802.11b/g/n wireless standards - 2.4GHz frequency band, MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) - Complies with Universal Serial Bus Rev. 2.0 specifications - High speed transfer TX data rate up to 150 Mbps - Supports wireless data encryption with 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES4n - Support software AP - Compliant with FCC Part 15.247 for US, ETS 300 328 for Europe

A powerful wireless adapter
Out of the box, Windows 8.1 supports plug-n-play. When I installed the Realtek utilities, Windows 8.1 crashed and kept crashing at the login screen. Thankfully I created a restore point just before installing, so I didn't lose anything. I also installed this in a Windows 7 system, and it works perfectly. My Kali Linux machine has been finicky with it, and since I'm using the 3.7 kernel I don't think there's full support for it yet. I bought this solely for Kali Linux, so I'm sad that the performance isn't quiet there. Hopefully Alfa and Realtek put out an upgrade for 3.7 kernel. I live on the far outskirts of my town so its usually several hundred feet in between all my neighbors and I. With Alfa I've been able to pick up 4 extra WiFi signals that I never knew existed before. This is definitely a powerful wireless adapter.*** UPDATED 12/7/13 ***A couple days ago I contacted Alfa about the drivers for the Linux 3.7 Kernel and they emailed me the link to the Realtek website containing all the updated drivers. The Windows 8.1 Driver/Utilities work great and they don't crash my computer. I'm still trying to get Kali Linux to read the wireless card. It will pick up signals for a couple minutes, and they it wont pick up anything. Not sure if anyone has had this issue. Still a powerful wireless adapter.

Plug and Play on Kali Linux. Let the fun begin!
Bought this to use with Kali Linux on my HP laptop. There are several threads stating that there is a lack of support for the chipsets in the NHR and that there are better choices, but I think they may just be older posts that no one has since commented on. My experience was out of the box plug and play compatibility with the drivers already in Kali Linux. It has an impressive range and I was immediately able to achieve monitoring and injection which soon after resulted in quickly penetrating my WEP test network using Aircrack-ng. I also tested this antenna out on my Macbook Pro and my Windows 7 Dell. It achieved the same impressive range and comes with a handy standalone network scanning program on both the Mac and the Dell. Didn't install the scanning program on the Linux computer due to it seeming rather a redundant task. Worth the money and I would recommend it to others.

Hardware is GREAT but the provided software sucks!
I purchased this item to increase my Wi-Fi range for a laptop running Windows 7 Professional OS using a built in Broadcom WLAN. This product definitely increases you operating range when your are trying to pick up a weak wireless signal. I was in my motorhome at a friend' house, trying to connect to her internet through her wireless router which showed on my strength meter as a poor connection. After connecting this devise it went to excellent. I think that is rather impressive. I was using the short antenna. I have not tried the 9" antenna. However, the installation of the provided software was a disaster. It was noted in a previous review that the software would not install the driver on Windows 7 OS for the AWUS036NHR which is correct. Tech support is in Taiwan so the only practical way to reach them is by email. However, using the information provided by the previous reviewer I downloaded the driver (RTL8188RU) from the Realtek website. After you unzip it and install the software the AWUS036NHR was recognized by the computer.SO BOTTOM LINE: ONCE YOU GET THE DRIVER AND THE UTILITY INSTALLED IT WORKS GREAT. HOWEVER,FOR SOME THIS MAYBE MORE THAN YOU WANT TO ENDURE. I MUST ADMIT I CAME CLOSE TO RETURNING THE ITEM TO AMAZON.

Wifi extended range Network antenna
I was very surprised how easy it was to install on my MAC desktop. I had some reservations after hearing some of the trouble some people have had with drivers. Some of the problem is with the signal meter on the computer. It doesn't reflect the improvement in signal strength or speed. If you focus on the software signal strength meter, you will be able to tell the difference. My signal was very weak and most of the time, I couldn't get on. After just a few minutes, I have a signal strength of 92 to 100%. We live in an RV and travel a lot. Many of the campgrounds have WIFI systems but they are very weak. I have no doubt this will work well in many of the campgrounds. One other note: Before I installed the AWUS036NHR, I detected five other networks. After the installation and setup, I have over sixteen networks detected in the same location.

ANOTHER GREAT PRODUCT FROM ALFA!
When I received this Alfa AWUS036NHR High Gain 2000 mw 2W B/G/N wifi adapter I immediately plugged it into my laptop and Windows 7 automatically installed the driver. It works perfectly, as expected, with all 16 signals it picked up showing 4-5 green bars! I know that two of those signals come from approximately 1/4 mile from where I live. Alfa claims their wifi adapters are the strongest on the market, and although I've never bought any other brand of long range wifi adapters, I'm willing to believe Alfa's claim. At least I know from using their wifi adapters that they are very strong and reliable indeed! It was a friend of mine who had bought one of Alfa's wifi adapters over a year ago and showed me the results on his computer, which induced me to buy one, and I've been sold on these excellent products ever since! Keep up the good work, Alfa, and I'll be a loyal customer! : )

do not buy
I have an ALFA AWUSO36H that does 802.11 b/g and it is super. I purchased this hoping for the same performance with added functionality of the N. Not even close. I can see a dozen networks with my 36H and my own AP shows about 90% signal strength. This model... 3 feet from my AP only shows 60% strength. The "high gain" antenna that comes with it shows the same or less. "Strongest on the Market..." I don't think so, it barely works. The up side was it was easy to install and the included utility is lets you turn it off when you don't need it. The clip is nice for attacking to a laptop. I actually have two of the older models and they are far better than the 36NHR. My advice... if you don't need wireless N try to find a 36H instead. I'll tinker with it, maybe an updated driver or a setting I have yet to find will bring this unit to life but for now I will say it's junk or I just got a bad unit. Nothing wrong with Amazon or DBROTH. Shipped quickly and I received what I purchased. I would buy from either of them again just not this particular unit.

The 9 dbi antenna is the key to this product
My application is streaming video from a laptop that is sufficiently far from a router (think mobile robot). As other reviewers have noted (on this model or similar), the 5 dbi antenna performs equally or poorly compared to the existing wifi adapter of my laptop. This leads me to believe that this device is not actually providing any significant power to signal transmission since the performance is similar (or worse at times); maybe this isn't worth the money. However, the 9 dbi antenna makes a significant difference in the range at which I could maintain a strong signal from the laptop. Also, the suctioned cradle works for my purposes. The rapid shipping (arrived the next day), ease of setup and functionality made this worth while. If I had more time / money to shop around I would have made different choices.
