This item is well constructed and looks like it will last a life time. The steel is polished and no blemishes. The handle snaps in place well, and holds just fine. My military style (old school utensils) fit just fine inside, when closed. I was worried, because I saw some comments that said the metal was flimsy...I don't see it here. The stainless steel is thick enough that you can't easily bend anything, and thicker on the handle.

Some of the reviews mentioned that this one is sturdier than most mess kits. It is sturdy, and of decent size. I have two disappointments though (one star off). It was not easy to clean. I cooked up a dish of rice and beans and Amy’s lentil soup over a low flame and after eating had a heck of a scrub with steel wool to get the food residue off. It is of course not nonh-stick and ergo I didn’t expect it to be “easy to clean”. You will need a scouring pad.And my other lament is that the partitioned cover (the half you eat out of) is very shallow. You wouldn’t want anything liquid in it lest it slosh over the side easily. I find myself eating cooked food right out of the cooking pan and use the partitioned side for sides like slaw or salad or kim chee or a roll. As long as you understand that the partitioned cover side is very shallow (maybe a half-inch deep) and still want this, I’d say go for it.

Very durable and great quality stainless steel. Perfect for camping!

I liked the idea of having a divided pan where I could cook or heat up two different vegetables. Too small for that, unless you’re feeding chipmunks. But otherwise it’s a decent piece of kit.

Overall I like it but it’s thinner metal than the kit I got from US military back in the 60’s.
