Quilt Code Underground Railroad Story Sings
Straightforward story with believable characters shows how slaves planned carefully to run to freedom in Canada, getting colder every step of the way. While the "code" may be somewhat fiction, it does show how staying on the northbound path, evading slave catchers and their dogs, and finally reaching the shores of freedom were real clues then memories kept in handcrafts like quilts. This is beautifully illustrated.

Compelling Story and History
I read this book with my students to celebrate Black History Month and they were very curious to know about the history behind the book. We also used the book to make our own freedom quilt activity. Overall, great book!

Quilting the Art of history.
Excellent for kids and adults... Teaches American history through the eye of a child. Much needed to reveal true history.

Poignant story, but disappointingly short.
Very disappointed. I had expected to see more quilts and quilt block information. Very, very, short story, although poignant, not with the detail I hoped to see.

This is a beautifully illustrated book
This is a beautifully illustrated book, and a poignant story of a young girl Hannah and her father's escape from a Georgia plantation in the south to Canada in the north on the Underground Railroad. Quilt patterns (read codes) that have been sewn into a special quilt by Hannah's mother show the route the refugees must take to the north. The book is a lovely and gentle way for children to be introduced to this traumatic, but important history.
