Batman: Damned

If you see Lee Bermejo's name on a comic, buy it; especially if you love Batman. This edition, in particular, is loaded with great artwork and quality. Lee Bermejo draws the way Ivan Albright paints. His art is so Gothic and realistic, which really compliments a Batman story. Sometimes you buy a comic and it doesn't live up to your expectation. The pairing of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo is guaranteed quality in every book.

I see that this one is a little divisive in the fact that so much is left to interpretation. Without going into spoiler territory, this is best looked at as a character study on Bruce Wayne/Batman with some different elements than what we are used to. This is not a book to blast through, but it is one to look at the meaning behind the panels (believe me, it will be hard to speed through these extremely well drawn panels). Again this is not a book for everyone, but if you come into it with the right mindset you're in for a visual and prolific experience. I know that I would be happy to revisit it. As far as the actual product goes, this is a very wide book as far as comics go. If you're a collector like myself, be ready for that.

Many of the poor reviews are valid, but only if you do not appreciate and understand ambiguity and metaphorical story telling. The story leaves a lot to be interrupted and does not tell a linear story. It feels almost what a Batman story done by David Lynch would feel like. It is a very well done story and mixed with the amazing art gives a new masterpiece in the Batman elseworld arc. Along with Red Rain, Gothman by Gaslight, and White Knight this is a great story if the non-linear way that the story is presented can be appreciated and doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of the read.

Only gripe I have with this book is the text is hard to read at times. I believe better font choices would have made this much more enjoyable. The story keeps you thinking the whole time and the art is so great it should be in a gallery.

This book is scary! The details are amazing the illustrations are phenomenal. Best Batman book I have read in a while.

After decades of goofiness and day-time pun-filled crime fighting, and years of PG mystery, we have finally received Batman as he was always meant to be written. The grit of this story and its art are almost revolutionary in what they mean for the future of Batman. While this isn't the first DC Black Label Batman (that would be Batman: White Knight), this sets a new bar in substance and quality. Batman's golden years were decent, but the black years have just begun, and if this is any indication of the direction Batman is going, there's no better time to be alive.

I never saw batman in this light and I am impressed! This book was nuts in that the artwork is so unique and amazing as well as the story. Prepare to see batman in a new light, and also be a little confused about the plot line... I had to look up online the synopsis because I was definitely thinking, "what the heck am I reading"?

Get this for the art, and the tone, both of which are incredible. Imagine Norman Rockwell meets Sin City. As far as the story (if you can call it that,) I'm not even really sure there's a coherent story here. Or maybe I'm just the kind of guy that needs to be spoon fed. But when I finish a graphic novel and can't even really tell you what the plot or the protagonist's goal was, I think it's an issue of author clarity more so than reader comprehension. Batman is investigating... something? Joker I guess? Not really sure what he's trying to learn. But he just kind of bounces around Gotham vaguely questioning people. It ultimately leads nowhere really and the ending is ambiguous. Honestly I got the feeling that the "plot" was really just a backdrop over which to feature Bruce's relentless psychological torment, and edgy internal dialogue, which take center stage throughout the entire novel. Interesting character work here, and a unique take on Batman/Bruce, but again, not really a story. One pet peeve I had is that characters repeatedly just so happen to show up in the right places at the right times, with no explanation of why they're there, or how they somehow knew Batman would be. There's one graveyard scene in particular in which multiple characters converge, with no explanation whatsoever of why any of them are there, and it's absolutely critical to this story that one of them in particular is here. Needless to say, the contrivance was blatant. Overall a good read. Incredible art, style, and tone. And a uniquely dark, gritty take on Batman/Bruce.

Não sou o maior fã do Azzarello, tem pouca coisa dele que realmente gosto. Uma delas é sua fase em HELLBLAZER e um dos motivos para eu comprar este álbum é a presença do John Constantine na história. E que história! Não é tanto uma aventura do Batman, como é um pesadelo. A possível morte do Coringa, cujo corpo é encontrado afogado, leva o herói de Gotham a transitar pela cidade e tentar descobrir o que aconteceu: se seu inimigo morreu mesmo ou está escondido. A partir daí, descobre - e relembra - fatos que não gosta muito. A arte de Bermejo está incrível, talvez seja a HQ mais bonita que vejo em tempos. O nivel de detalhes, as expressões dos personagens, as caracterizações (Constantine É A CARA do Sting em alguns momentos), os ângulos cinematográficos. Só por ela, o álbum já valeria a pena. E o uniforme do Batman, em uma versão realista, é impressionante. Mas, para completar, ainda tem as várias surpresas, reviravoltas e participações especiais - que, aliás, fazem esta história quase ser um "Batman da Vertigo". É uma história de terror, no final das contas. E uma que vale reler daqui a um tempo, para reavaliar todas as pistas que estavam meio claras, mas você só nota que estavam na resolução. Até me deu vontade de ler o CORINGA da dupla. A nota mais precisa seria 4,5 estrelas.
