Eighteen-year-old Moira Mitchell grew up in the shadows of Vegasโs stage lights while her fatherโs career as a magician soared. More than anything, Moira wants to be a magician too, but her father is dead set against her pursuing magic. When an invitation to join the Cirque American mistakenly falls into Moiraโs possession, she takes action. Instead of giving the highly coveted invitation to its intended recipient, Raleigh, her fatherโs handsome and worldly former apprentice, Moira takes off to join the Cirque. If she can perform alongside its world-famous acts, she knows sheโll be able to convince her dad that magic is her future. But when Moira arrives, things take on an intensity she canโt control as her stage magic suddenly feels likeโฆ real magic. To further distract her, Raleigh shows up none too pleased at Moiraโs presence, all while the Cirqueโs cocky and intriguing knife thrower, Dez, seems to have it out for her. As tensions mount and Moiraโs abilities come into question, she must decide whatโs real and whatโs an illusion. If she doesnโt sort it out in time, she may forever remain a girl in the shadows. Review: Girl in the Shadows - Girl in the Shadows - was such a wonderful series . I loved ๐ฅฐ both of the books and audible books !! Definitely recommend this books ๐ and series !! A one you do not want to miss !! Loved the characters and glad they were in both the books !! Review: Run away to the circus, be a stage magician, only to learn that magic is real - Since The Night Circus is one of my favorites, I've been reading several books lately with themes surrounding the circus or odd assortment of treasures. I picked up this book, Girl in the Shadow, as a recommendation and liked the magician/circus theme. It is the second book in Cirque Americain young adult book and comic book series, but somewhat stands on its own without having to read the first book in the series, Girl on a Wire. I had not read the first book. I say somewhat in that there are parts of the first book that form a basis and back story of Girl in the Shadow. However, the Girl in the Shadow is its own story about a girl joining the circus striving to be one of the first few women practicing stage magic (I loved how she incorporated woman magicians of the past into her act as her inspiration). Of course, the stage magic also crosses over into the world of mystical magic, charms, and magical families. The book does start slowly and the back story from the first book kept making me wonder if I should read the first book beforehand. However, it started to speed up and get mushy romantic a third into the book so I continued on then got hooked halfway through to where I had to finish. Overall, a enjoyable read but I think I will need to pick up the first book to help fill in a few blanks.

Magical circus YA read
Moira leaves her famous Vegas magician father to secretly join the circus... She gets caught up in a bid to find a magical coin, meets her long lost mother, and maybe finds love on the way :-) There's adventure, intrigue, magical feats, romance, friendship, and drama.

Magical
Set in a circus world called Cirque American this is a story about an 18 year old young woman named Moira who is a frustrated want to be Magician. Her father is a renowned Magician and she wants to follow in his footsteps. For his own reasons he refuses to allow her to, so she practices on her own time and in secret. She finally tries to step out of his Shadow only to have him refuse to even see what she is capable of doing. So she sets out on her own path not telling him of her plans. In the process she learns things about herself. This is a compelling coming of age story of a young woman who has to learn to trust herself in order to reach her potential. I'm a big comic book reader so I couldn't help but think of Zatanna Zatara, a magician in the DC universe. There was a moment in the book where these two worlds collided which made me smile. This is book 2 in the Cirque American story. The first book Girl on a Wire was a big hit with my teenage daughter so we were looking forward to this one. This is not a sequel however. Moira is a new addition to this universe but we see familiar characters. One doesn't have to have read the first to read this although reading Girl on a Wire will give texture to the story. For those who want to read more about Jules and Remy from Girl on a Wire? There is a four issue comic book mini series entitled Girl Over Paris currently in progress. I found this book to be extremely charming.

A fun story with themes of girl power
A fun story with themes of girl power, rebellion, and honesty. I can't think of much to say about it right now except that I was never bored, and it wasn't all predictable, which was great. It's got both magic and "magic", so if you like a twist on your love stories (or if you'd like to learn a few things about how magicians pull off their tricks, or what some major female magicians were best known for), you should definitely read this book. Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

Very young adult
I expected this series to be for a little older crowd. I enjoy YA, but this seems very young even though the characters are not. If you rate it for what it is I would say a four, but it really is just a basic story of a privileged woman magician ignorant of the world around her. I don't know who the target audience is?
