how do you insert a battery. I cannot find out how to open it?

The tail of the flashlight can be unscrewed counterclockwise. Please insert AA batteries or 14500 batteries. AA batteries are very easy to buy

How do you switch between the different modes of light, like flashing to constant on beam please?

Red button on the end. Press once for bright Red. 2nd push dimmer red 3rd push flashing the press again to turn off. Easy when you get the hang of it as most flashights now operate on the same principle except for the British Army standard Angle torch.
