What a great device
Update: June 26,2015. I am exceedingly pleased with this portable computer. It does everything I need it to. And it is so portable. When Windows did their routine update the display setting was reset to default. This causes the computer to act like it is frozen when it wakes up. The tablet isn't frozen, the screen has been shut off. I had to change the display setting. Thank goodness I wrote the review or I would have forgot how to do it. There isn't a simple way to get to the settings. It seems like a seven step journey to get there but it works and my machine is back. I have three computers in order to do work at home. This device is perfect for on the go, bedside, at the table with a cup of coffee, where ever and whenever. I'm a therapist, this machine is my workhorse. Windows is windows, stiff and awkward, but the tablet always does well. I also got the Microsoft sculpted mouse and a small Bluetooth keyboard for extensive work with a lot of typing.Update' April 18, 2015: I am very positive about this tablet. My colleague and I experienced tablet freezing when turning on the tablet. It can be easily fixed by going into advanced settings. Like this...> Control panel ....> hardware and sound.... > power options.... > change when computer sleeps...> change advanced power settings...> +display...> 'turn off display.' Set both options to zero, then you will get 'never' appearing in the window. My tablet no longer freezes and neither does my colleague's tablet. It works, just don't be afraid, or take it to someone to make the display never shut off. Our tablet sleeps and the screen shuts off as before, but now does not freeze when starting back up from sleep.I am using the tablet for work. I am a therapist and do a lot of writing. The built-in handwriting OCR is perfect (95+%).DO NOT Download all the updates for 8.1. It completely destroyed ability to use the system. I had to reset the device.Update: March l9,2015. A superb machine, only limited by the windows 8 operating systems.Toshiba does an excellent job managing how everything keeps functioning together.CONS: Sometimes there is a mystery pause trying to wake up the tablet. What seems to happen (when not charging) is the tablet goes to sleep after unplugging, then, also, goes into another standby mode, from which the tablet cannot be woken. Holding the left power button for 6 seconds and then restarting it with a six second press will start it. This is disconcerting as it is totally unexpected. I would call this "freezing" but with a little patience and no panic it starts. The other CON is password entering. This is an arbitrary experience. Sometimes I must use the microsoft long password and sometimes not. I think this is the Windows 8.l bizarreness. I just figured out that windows 8.1 is actually two operating systems trying to provide a user experience. I can only describe the experience as heavy. The user must remember what program is used for the appropriate interface. For example, Internet Explorer on the 'tile' interface is not the same as in the traditional non-tile interface.Pros good battery life, portability, great pen writing experience. (There is a learning curve, but worth it.) TIP: Go into computer settings and change to maximum performance rather than "let windows manage" There is a definite speed increase and no losses that I can see.Blue-tooth mouse and keyboard are flawless. Both items are good to have and will be handy for details. The pen is good and can do all that the mouse does and virtual keyboard can do its job. But once in awhile, maybe, once a week it is easier to use the external tools. This tablet is a full computer. Because it is a work device I have not put in games. One last note: using an external disk drive requires that the disk drive is compatible with USB 3. A real pain and expensive.

handwriting feature is good, but too unreliable and worries about future access to my notes
I bought it for making (handwritten) notes and it does this job but my overall experience is mixed, at best.Plus:+ handwriting with the Toshiba Trunote software works and the results are pretty goodMinus:- the pen does not have an on/off button and many times simply does not work. The solution than is 1) put on/off the cap 2) unscrew the battery or 3) restart the whole tablet.- this windows 10 tablet is no match for my sony Xperia tablet. which is quick, smooth and simply works. This one is slow, requires always updates and is just an annoying experience. Especially when you need to make notes and the whole machine just stalls because who knows what kind of internal process is going on.- though Toshiba Trunote is good, I am extremely worried that when I loose this tablet, or simply upgrade to a new device, I will access to all my notes, because I have not yet found any software that is able to open these files, or at least not the backup files I make weekly and store in the cloud. My solution for now is to make 3 monthly a PDF download of all my individual notebooks which is a hell of a job. I keep searching for a more acceptable solution and maybe abandon Trunote for something more universal...So my verdict is 3 star, but better would be 2.5 given my worries for the future.I would probably not recommend it to a friend.EDIT: Since writing this review I switched to OneNote, which is not as nice as Trunote, but solves all back-up issues and integrates pretty nicely with MS office

Avoid like the plague...
Don't touch this tablet with a ten foot pole. The hardware is cheap and underpowered. The screen is terrible compared with products by Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft. The text is fuzzy and pixelated. Hand writing doesn't look smooth. For a little bit more money you can get a much better experience. For example, the galaxy note 10.1 is about $150 more, but the software and stylus are much better and the screen is amazing. The software on the Toshiba is a train wreck. I bought it for marking up pdfs and taking hand written notes. For note taking, I used the included TruNote software that is integrated closely with the tablet and stylus. Big mistake. I tried to delete on part of a notebook to clean up my notes. Instead it deleted multiple notebooks. Not a problem, right? Just take it out of the recycle bin? Not so. Deletion is permanent. No undo. No trash can. No backup. No cloud. I lost a whole days worth of brainstorming and note taking. The best in class software for inking pdfs (natively) isn't great either. I used DrawboardPdf. It was buggy. Annotations would frequently disappear when writing. Then you would have to go back on page and forward again for the inking to show up again. The problem is you don't have many choice for pdf annotation that support the pen.If you want a tablet with a stylus, consider the Galaxy Note products. If you absolutely have to have Windows, you might want to spring for the Surface.
