Is this board good for "shredding the gnar"? Thats all my son talks about these days, and I'm curious as to if this has "gnar shredding" capabilities.

Nada - the board is good for beginners. To make it suitable for real shredding, the cheapest route is to change out the bushings, wheels and bearing. All are relatively cheap, especially if you can get the board for a good price. If skating for tricks and at parks, a couple of good general wheels are some Bones ATF 55MM and Spitfire 55MM are some the best and cost effective wheels you can buy (Nicotine, Sector 9, Ricta or Mini Logo are decent also) . For bearings, you'll want to get a set of Bones Reds, Mini Logo, or Rush Abec 5,7, or 9s, which are also relatively inexpensive for the quality they provide. The overall cost still came up to be a little cheaper than an inexpensive pro deck alternative with most of the above included and ready to go. It was between this, which was on clearance, plus buying new wheels, bearings and bushings, or a pro deck from Girl skateboards which was about $80 for a decent deck. The deck is holing up pretty well as I now have it set up for speedier duties with 55mm Kryptonic Star Track Red reissues and Rush bearings. It is supremely fast and honestly gives my premium longboards a run for their money in speed, kinda scary actually.

The top of the skateboard is black and it does not have any graphics on top; just the bottom.

my daughter is asking for a skateboard for xmas.. she is 8. wanted a penny board would this be similar

This is a great skateboard. I bought this for my daughter last year who was 9 and she has had so much fun. Not sure what a penny board is but this skateboard is awesome for girls.

It isn't. I would not recommend any skateboard for a child that young. My daughter is exceptionally athletic, I didn't get her one til aged. 7. I would suggest you get a scooter instead.
