Very powerful tool
I keep it in my pocket at all times. Unlike a handgun, this is lightweight and comfortable to carry, which for me is a big deal. Also you can carry it into many places where guns are not allowed. Unlike a gun, with this if you miscalculate and use excessive force you will probably not be facing a long prison sentence. Seems to be more durable and better designed than the standard pepper spray. I chose the silver color because I thought the paint would scratch over time so I wanted the color to blend with the metal. It does sometimes tend to slip easily out of the pocket. People sometimes are not sure what it is so that provides some privacy. As a force equalizer I think it probably is a very powerful tool. Even a big muscular person it seems can be stopped to some degree with this, as well as I assume various animals. Against a firearm this might give some decent chance of defence. If sprayed in a closed room, even if not directly on an individual, it will soon make the room uncomfortable to stay in. Overall, this is one of the best and most convenient self defense tools I know.

Great combo defense option.
I recently was put at increased risk and decided to begin carrying pepper spray at my family's urging. I chose this option because it is more discrete than a traditional pepper spray, and I liked that it doubles as a kubaton (which I have prior experience working with) giving you multiple defense options. Because it is not obviously pepper spray, I feel comfortable keeping it on me at work and I have a force multiplier should I ever need to defend myself. It is comfortable in my hand and fits well in the pocket of my uniform. While I don't feel "safer" per se it is comforting to know I have options if escaping or pepper spray misses or fails (there is a population of people unaffected by pepper spray and as well as who become enraged and fight harder rather than being distracted). I like that there is an option to purchase practice cartridges. Know your tools and practice with them. Running should always be your first choice if possible. Great option.

Discreet and easy to operate
I exercise in a public park and I have been threatened by two off-leash dogs within a month. Since, I bought this, I have not had to use it for protection, but I feel much more secure by having it in my pocket. It's easy to use with one hand and it does have a finger activated safety switch to prevent accidental discharge. It's a solid piece of aluminum, so it could have additional use as an impact tool similar to a Kubotan for people who have some training in self-defense techniques.

Innovative
Ordered recently and had an issue with one of the inserts. I contacted the company through Amazon; they were very cordial and rectified the issue immediately. There are trade-offs when considering the amount of solution and maximum effective distance, but I haven't found anything on the market that's more compact. Application is also more intuitive in my opinion. For that reason I'm more likely to carry it on a regular basis. The product feels very sturdy and well built.I plan to buy more of these and a few of their other products in the future if this one continues to be reliable and perform to standard.

DISCREET LOOK- SECRET WEAPON
This is the coolest undercover weapon I've ever owned. I do recommend getting the extra pack with the inert formula that way you have two doses of heat, the one that comes in the barrel and a replacement. DEFINITELY TEST RIGHT AWAY. I hope I never have to use this but I wanted to say something in response to the complaints that the Palm Defender isn't high power enough: If you are using mace that means you lost your chance to run away and avoid close range conflict. MACE IS A CLOSE RANGE DEFENSE WEAPON! Ignore the reviews about it not projecting far enough (the reviews that cite issues with the depressor probably just got the one bad one in the batch, doesn't happen that often and if you test before you rely on it, you would know if it needed replacing.) I absolutely love the natural grip, the rotating keyring turns it into a secondary weapon which if you have taken any self defense classes, you know the follow up action is just as important as the first strike. AND the safety isn't bulky and it WORKS! I feel safer, more badass, and totally nondescript with this on my keychain.

The best defense is one you can use
I'll list the downsides first, and they have pretty much been covered in other reviews. Small size, only a couple of short bursts. Short range. However, it still gets five stars. I tried to convince my gf to carry something when she is on call and has to see patients at the clinic in the middle of the night. I got this for her (with the test inserts-get those too!), and she actually carries it attached to her badge lanyard. While small and has only a limited supply of "juice", that is one of the strong points. If she needs it, it is hanging right there. In practice she could have it off and fired in under a second. I recommend a break away buckle for use on a lanyard, you can just pull it off and go! Far superior to have a small bit of spray that she can have ready at a moments notice than something she may have to dig in a pocket to get. Or leave in a pocket, waaay over by the door...And also, as other users have said, the metal body makes a great little striking tool. I would highly recommend practicing the strikes before he or she needs to use it. And keep a couple keys on end, they really do make a great whip. She didn't believe it, so I showed her how to snap the wrist and by the end of the day she could tear through an orange. Eyes are much more delicate.

Completely defective
I fortunately decided to test this device and found it to be completely defective. This device dribbled a small amount of the pepper spray when activated. It literally dripped out of the tip, there was no projection, much less spraying, of any kind. Given the purpose of this item, this is entirely unacceptable.
