Heart Aflame: Daily Readings from Calvin in the Psalms

(4.6) A Reformation legend uses the richness of the Psalms to warm the heart & soothe the soul.
Life often hurts. It bruises, it disrupts and it distracts. Consequently, it’s one thing for the Christian to know that they should pray; it’s another thing for them to know how they should pray and where to specifically look in the Scriptures for a pertinent text. Heart Aflame does just that: this daily devotional spans the entirety of human experience and reveals how God has already spoken to all the worries and troubles we will endure in this life. This joy is marvelously sweet because God’s heavenly Word not only speaks to earthly realities; His gracious hand also uses the means of the Scriptures and prayer to lift up the spirit, fortify the mind and calm the heart. Christ is the grand focus of this book, as our Mediator and High Priest who actively intercedes for all His sheep.Furthermore, with masterful precision it is clear that Calvin has an experiential familiarity with the aching heart; he therefore seemingly speaks from the world of text to deliver divine morsels of truth and hope that can be secured through prayer. As examples, Calvin provides prayers for people who are running away from God (Day 210), praying when you don’t feel like it (Day 244) and how to pray when under trial (Day 87). Other examples include praying when life doesn’t seem to make any sense or when life seems not be fair.Structurally, this book offers a quick (one page) reading for each day of the year. The book moves sequentially through every Psalm (1-150) but for obvious reasons, it does not go through every verse of every Psalm (that would be a much longer book). Each entry was mined by the editor (Sinclair Ferguson) from Calvin’s separate commentaries on the Psalms. The typical day therefore focuses on a handful of verses which are presented as verse and then an exposition. In you are looking for a new devotional, I think Heart Aflame is a wonderful way to spend a year in the Psalms with John Calvin. Certainly, after a year, these daily meditations can ground the Christian in the firm foundation that is our Lord. Amen.

Heart Aflame: Daily Readings from Calvin on the Psalms
This is one of the best devotional books that I have read. To see Calvin's views on the selected Psalms is an inspiration. He truly gives the Glory to God. I bought a copy of "Heart Aflame: Daily Readings from Calvin on the Psalms" for each member of my family.

John Calvin is challenging for me to study.
I am using it as part of my daily studies, but I still am getting use to Calvin's expository style of writing. Perhaps I should rate it again after I have gotten further into the book. I will continue to read it through.
