Magmates Blade Guards, Red, Large (Pack of 2)

I have more sharp knives than my knife block will hold so am always on the lookout for decent affordable guards. After trying these out I'm still looking. I bought them locally in a multipac and have had them for a couple of months. Out of the package, the first noticeable thing was how soft the plastic was, the second was the strong plasticky smell. Still worth a try, I thought. When I soaked one in warm soapy water to clean it, the plastic warped badly and the glue holding one of the magnetic strips let go of it rendering the thing unusable.

I am a professional cook and have been looking for a blade guard that actually protects not only the sharp-end but the entire blade itself. I transport my knives everyday to work and the get jostled quite a bit. These guards stay on and do not come off until I need them to do so. The one thing I learned is that the "sharp" edge should not be facing the "ribbed" side of the guard. If your knives are as sharp as mine, the ribs of the knife guard do not stand a chance! Besides, the knife's edge can actually stick-out between the ribs and your edge can be compromised. Always lay the sharp end toward the opening. I've had mine for three months of continuous use and they look like the day I took them out of the packaging. Great product.

Zero stars, fell apart in a week. Maybe if you use your knife once every couple of weeks and these stay in a drawer they might hold up. Utter crap. Do not even think about ordering.

I ordered this item once, it was nothing like pictured and they only sent one guard. I returned it and tried again. The same thing happened. I never write reviews but this is absurd. DO NOT BUY.

3/13/15 UPDATE I sent an email to Bisbell and heard back from the quickly. They are aware of the problems with this blade guard and have developed a newer version which is completely different. They have been kind enough to send me the newer version. The newer version is not rubbery….it is a hard plastic and it appears that the adhesive that glues the magnetic strips in place is no longer an issue. Unless they make a smaller version than the one they sent to me the newer version is for larger knives. It is much bigger than the original rubber style which was the correct size for a 6" blade a little less than 1" wide…this size knife is much to small for the hard plastic version…again…unless there is a smaller size. I am going to leave my 1 star because my 1 star review pertains to the original rubber blade guard and not the newer style hard plastic guard. I have checked here at Amazon and do not see the newer version for sale on this site so I cannot review it.2/23/15 Purchased 1 Bisbell/Magmates Magnetic Blade Guard on 12/27/14 (not from Amazon) and already the magnetic strips do not adhere to the sides of the compartment as they should. Nothing crazy has been done with this item...no dishwasher....no washing or soaking in hot water. The outside has been wiped with a damp warm sponge...thats it. Basically this item is useless at this point. We have tried adhering the magnetic strips to where they should be and as soon as you open the compartment to take out the knife the strips are stuck to the knife, not to the inside of the holder as they should be. This is way too quick for this item to go down hill. I have other knife guards I've had for years....non-magnetic....they are all just like brand new. The magnetic blade guard is a good idea, but an idea that doesn't last. I was hesitant to buy this as I was concerned that the strips would not stay put which is exactly what is happening. Needless to say...we cannot recommend this product and certainly would not purchase again. After we purchased this item I looked at the reviews and we are not the only ones having a problem with this item. Usually, I've read reviews prior to purchasing something, but in this case we were traveling and stopped in a kitchen/china supply store and this product was there...previous to this we had never heard of this product. We thought we would give it a try. We purchased this at a store a good 2 1-2 hours from us so it makes no sense to return it to the store....although not allot of money, still...money down the drain!

ok.. at the 1st glance.. this is like an answer I had been waiting for for my bread & slicer. WRONG! It's nothing more than a 2 strips of magnetic tape on plastic covers! The Magnetic strip came off on day 1 and the hinge ribs start to break off on wk2. Totally NOT recommended!

Great product, would be a 5 star if the magnetic strip inside didn't come off in the first 2 weeks of buying
