Some extra stuff in this movie novelization
If you are a fan of Godzilla and more specifically 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' along with the 'Monsterverse' then you will probably enjoy reading this novelization. If you've seen the movie, then you will obviously know most of the story. Anybody who has seen the movie will know that the editing wasn't the best. It could be quite confusing as to who was where at any given moment. I know that I wasn't always sure if the characters were in the helicopter, submarine, Argo or a base somewhere. This book will help you to understand a bit better some of the more confusing moments. Obviously any dialogue you may have missed will be right here for you to read.Additionally there are some scenes in the book that weren't in the movie. I'm not sure if this was because these scenes were deleted or if they were even filmed. It's probable that the author had a copy of the script. Maybe he saw an early version of the movie. Perhaps these scenes will show up in an extended edition of the movie. I hope so because some of them involved other monsters. Let me be clear here. This is not a different version of the same story. It's the same story just with a few scenes added in.One more thing... if you didn't get the names of the other monsters, this book will give you their names and a better description of each monster.

Beat by Beat of the Film
I wouldn't say it is a book written to such a degree of finesse as The Godfather or LOTR, but if you want a book that can play the movie in your head, and fill you in on scenes that were left out of the movie then this'll do it for you! Die hard Godzilla fans, and fans of the film will love this book. At least I did. It's an easy read, and a nice play by play on the film with some inner monologues to help maybe flesh out the characters and their motivations. I find having read the book gives me a greater appreciation of the characters when I see them on film.As to whether I should need a book to fill in those holes, I will not comment, but regardless I loved the book. Read it in under a week.

Evolving view of the "monsterverse"
Comic books evolved when they became more realistic, with the occasional actual death and heroes grappling with ethical issues and sometimes engaging in questionable behavior. More importantly, villains evolved from just being evil for no reason to having an explanatory backstory (e.g., Magneto having survived a concentration camp and thus his desire to protect a minority such as mutants from ever experiencing such a thing again). The Godzilla stories have similarly evolved. Godzilla is no longer a mindless engine of destruction. He is the king of the Titans, charged with maintaining the balance of nature on Earth. He has gone from being a monster to being the hero humanity fights alongside against an errant titan (although Godzilla does most of the heavy lifting). Keyes brings the movie to life, expanding on characters’ motivations and thought patterns. I listened on audible and the dialogue was realistic and entertaining. The narrator did a great job of capturing characters, including exasperated exclamations upon seeing yet another horror emerge (a sort of “Oh, for God’s sake! REALLY?”). The story is set in motion by the actions of perhaps well-meaning but ultimately misguided and miscalculating humans and it is up to Godzilla (with a bit of help from Mothra) to return the precious balance to Earth. The action is fast paced, and the stories have evolved from simple horror/science fiction to social commentary. See Rhoads’ Japan’s Green Monsters for an excellent series of essays to capture the evolution of the stories over the last 70 years.

This is a well written sci fi novel and it helps you understand more of the back story to the movie.

Included Extra Scenes, a Thrilling Adventure
This book was one of the rate treasure fans love, a novel that tells the story of the film and expands upon it bringing new scenes and a better understanding of what happened. It fills in the gaps and answers many question poses by the film. If you are a Toho film fan and have seen Godzilla, King of the Monsters, the film is a love letter to those of us who grew up with the Godzilla films. Special touches and elements are included here that harken back to those films. The events surrounding the ORCA make more sense in the book, since the extras were cut from the film. I hope the film will have a directors cut when released on Blu -ray. A gripping, thrilling story that was enhanced by the audiobook. A must for Godzilla fans.
